How good is a Hi-Point handgun?
I was browsing through the local pawn shop the other day and saw several handguns manufactured by Hi-Point. I'm looking for something to consider a toss around gun, something that is economical but fairly reliable. I went to their website and learned of the lifetime warranty. The dealer said that he has sold a large quantity of these handguns and has been suprised by the consumer feedback on accuracy and reliablity. Question, is it worth the $110 pricetag?

Tuff question. You get what you pay for most of the time and this would fall into the catagory. I have owned several for many years.
Accuracy: Fair to poor out of the box. If you work with a file and the sights you can get a nice group at 50 ft., over that the pattern is very wide. OK for hearing go bang but far from a tack driver.
Realiability: Good. They will eat about any type ammo. Very difficult to take apart without a good punch. Firing pin tends to hang forward so round won't feed if not kept lubricated.
This is not a gun I would stake my life on, and they're heavy and ugly. But they shoot and are fun (I use mine for when I take shooters to the range and they want to shoot a lot of ammo and don't care if they're in the black or not).
If you have just a little more money I would recommend a used Taurus, but everyone has their reasons just like I did when I bought them.0 -
It can be called a handgun because it will fire a round while being held in your hand. That's where the similarity stops. I agree with above. Buy yourself a Taurus. 0 -
If I had to have a gun and Hi-Point was all I had money for, I would buy one. And that's where much of their market is.
I would not put my life or the lives of my family into a gun that only cost $100. But with that said, my son bought one from a fella at one of the local gun shows ... when I saw it I asked him what in the heck he was thinkin' and he said that it only cost him $75 and he occassionally takes it out and blasts away with it. It's their carbine model and he's never had a failure w/ it so, who knows. Me I still wouldn't depend on it for defensive use, and neither does the my son ...
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
I bought 40S&W HiPoint from a co-worker and have been trying to get a jam or malfunction out of it without success. I hate it because it is heavy and ugly and is basically an overgrown Jennings in design. No jams and good accuracy, but darn ugly. Same thing with the carbine, no jams or malfuctions either. For plinking they are fun, for self-defense, don't skimp, buy a Glock[;)]

Isn't High Point manufactured in Mansfield, Ohio? If it is then I'm thinking of the right gun and I would not own one. Save another couple hundred and get a decent Ruger.

I have a brand new Highpoint 9mm and I will never shoot it. A friend gave it to me because he was afraid of it. I contacted the local range where I shoot and they told me it might blow in half the first shot and then again, maybe not. I asked them about the lifetime warrentee and they said the guns are made so cheaply that they can and will send you a new one. Problem is, if the back blows off, you may not be around to receive it. My shooting buddy told my wife to make a wind chime out of it because he doesn't want anyone to get hurt with it if he sells it.
Hope this helps...
If your shooting stance is good, you're probably not moving fast enough or using cover correctly0 -
Hello, spoken like a true moron. The gun is safe to shot. Not high power loads, but for just ball ammo for fun. It is not great on the accuracy but I did kill a chipmunk with a 9mm Hi-Point once. I can hit the center at about 20 feet, and I can do that all day, just for fun.

I own to Hi-points. Both the 9mm handgun and the 9mm carbine. I have never had a problem with either. I bought the handgun to keep in the jeep while out in the woods or 4 wheelin'. Sure as heck didn't want to toss around something expensive. As far as the carbine it has probably had over 12,000 rounds put thru it and I have not had any problems yet (yes I bought it cause I thought it looked neat). They are both a real pain in the butt to clean. Way too many pressed on parts. As far as accuracy.....I didn't think it was too bad for such an inexpensive gun. 0 -
I have not used the handguns, but I own a Hi-Point carbine and it is very accurate and perfectly reliable. I have fired many hundreds of rounds with it. I bought it used and it was missing the rear sight and sling swivels. I called the company and they sent the parts out for free including a new firing pin and spring because the design had changed since my gun had been made. (I still use the originals as they work just fine,) I would recommend the carbine to anyone. 0
