Savage 99
Can you tell me what year Savage starting putting a serial number on the 99 lever gun? I have one that does not have a serial and do not know what model of the 99 it is. I can give some details. Chamber 300 Savage, 24" barrel, mag indicator, and an indicator when gun is cocked and chambered. Aside from that, I don't know what other info to include. Thanks.
I appreciate all the info. I have looked all over the receiver and everywhere else I could not find a serial...still have not found one. The sights have been removed and a scope mounted on it. I did take the scope and mount off to see if serial would be there...but the only thing stamped on top was SAVAGE 99...nothing else. It does have the lever lock for safety. Forearm is checkered with an upside down triangle...and the grip has checkering as well. I guess the Mag indicator is a counter for number of rounds in the magazine... I really don't know where else to look for a serial. Thanks again to all.
Okay, I just got an email back from Small Arms Shop and told them the same thing I have posted here...they told me that in 1947 some guns did leave without serial numbers because the machine that stamped the numbers were broke at that time and they were shipped out without serial on them. Can anyone confirm this? Thanks again.

I was at a Pawn shop today and saw an older Savage 99. I am wondering what Model it is and how much it should be worth to buy. It was chambered in 300 savage with a 24" bbl. It had a saftety located by the lever and the rotary magazine down inside. Sparse chekering on the Stock, but it was cut and not impressed. NO cracks in the stock. No checkering on the Forend. It had a plastic looking cap on the pistol grip and a steel buttplate. It was listed for $359.00 I looked and looked but could find no model number. Does anybody have any idea what this model was? Where would the model number be? I should have written down the serial number . I can go back.

s4,
I'm gonna take a stab at it.My reference says it was made in 1947
The only 3 models that were made in '47 were:99EG Post-War,99R Post-War and 99RS Post- war.
Your's having the Redfeild sight(assuming it to be original)would make it a 99RS Post-War.Made 1946-58,in 95% condition,$400.
Hope this helps,
BW

You might want to take a look at: http://www.savage99.com/ for some info. You can pin down date of manufacture before about 1952, after that no one seems to have records. I have the books on the 99's and can dig them out if you need more information. Drop me an e-mail if you do and we will try to pin it down.

99R & 99RS do not have schnoble tip forearms. The 99EG is very commonly seen and your description is correct for this model variation. 0 -
In the condition you describe, I think value could go as high as $650. There is a lot of regional variation, but 99's have become "collectable" which has driven up prices somewhat. I commonly see beaters in the west being offered for $450, and really fine examples start at $800-$900 and go to well over $3K. Again, a lot depends upon where you are, and condition is paramont.

Shooter, if my info in correct and I think it is; your 99 would have been made between 1935 and 1960. Really need caliber, where the markings are(savage 99, etc.), checkering says made after 1940, and its almost certain to be a EG model, the 24" barrell means it was made after 1940 being made in 22" before 1940. My guess would be that it is a .300 Savage caliber since they were made in great numbers in that caliber. 0 -
My thanks to all who answered, From the answers given I believe it is a 99EG.
