Handi Rifle in 45-70
Anyone own one? Hows the accuracy? Reliability? Recoil? I've been borrowing a Marlin 1895 for the past few years and really love the 45-70 cartridge, but I'm on a limited budget. Just looking for some insight. Also, about how much should I expect to pay for one new? Thanks!

Accuracy: Average, probably not as good as your Marlin--not as good as my Marlin--but more than good enough for hunting. Not a target rifle. Reliability: Hard to find anything more reliable than a single-shot rifle. Always works. Recoil: Subjective topic. I find it bearable with a good recoil pad. More than a .30-30, less than an 8mm Mauser with a steel buttplate. About 10 shots is all I want to shoot it in one session. 0 -
The Wesson & Harrington "Buffalo Classic" I had was fairly accurate.
Recoil was an issue, however, and that's one reason I no longer have it.
I couldn't stand to shoot it enough to get used to it,and it weighed in at about 9 lbs.

I had a 45-70 Handi rifle that I sold to a friend a year ago. I was getting misfires with some ammo. All I ever shot were handloads in once fired brass. With much experimentation the gun turned out to have headspace on the high spec. Some of the rims on my brass were towards low spec. That was causing the misfires. Overall my experience was a good one. I'd buy another handi rifle again. Probably in a 22 hornet.

Thanks! Not all too worried about recoil, just want an idea....I'm used to shootin 3.5 inch goose loads and 3 inch turkey loads, used to some real shoulder pounders, just like to know what to expect...thanks again...

I just bought one of the NEF handi rifle in the 45-70 cal and have to say that the accuracy is Very good and their reliability is not a problem really with a single shot. Recoil is about 30-06 with normal ammo but with the Big Bore ammo is about a 338win mag so recoil is heavy but you get use to it. New NEF Handi rifle in 45-70 should cost about $215.00 so a good price for a Very good gun.
Plus you can use more powerful rounds then you could in a lever action 45-70.[:)]0 -
I had one a few years ago and it was a very good gun for the money, and a lot of fun to bust cans or rocks with that big slug!!
You can always use 300 gr. slugs to help the recoil. No need for 405's unless ya just "gotta".
Mine would shoot just a smidge over an inch at 75yds,and a good shooter would probably do better...my eyes suk.
EAA is coming out with a new single shot this spring for about the same money that looks goood, from the picture anyway.

With the exception of the above statement (I would hesitate to load a NEF Handi-Rifle to the levels I have loaded a Marlin 1895 Guide Gun.)
I pretty much agree with the majority of comments, and don't think you'd be unhappy with the accuracy or value.0 -
Marlin model 1895 made AFTER 1979 can handle the Buffalo Bore rounds and Ruger and NEF-handi rifle can also use the buffalo bore ammo with no danger to your self or the gun. If ya want a real round that WILL have hard recoil try the Buffalo Bore 45-70 in 430gr.lbt-lfn with 2000fps and a Hard hitting 3597Ft.lbs Engery[8D] 0 -

I stand corrected, I will take your word on that recoil[:D][:D][:D]
I loaded some heavy 300 grainers for the Guide gun and that was enough for me!!!0 -
I'll take your word on it too! I shoot the 300 grain hollowpoints from federal for deer, thats enough for me...dont need any more power than that. Thanks for all the input, I hope to have the money saved up by this fall so I can have my deer rifle!
