Same as Stevens 520 ... inexpensive shooters, not collectors pieces, little data available in my library. Roughly 190,000 520's were made between 1912 and 1932 ... how many Wards were made ????

It's a John Browning design with a slight "hump back".

Unfortunately I don't think your going to get any closer than that on the dates. But I've been wrong before.

The Wards Westernfield Mod.30 is not a Stevens Mod.520. It is a Stevens Mod.520"A". The receiver end where barrel slides up into is shorter on the original 520 and barrels will not interchange. I know because I bought a 520 barrel and it didn't work on the 520"A" style receiver on the Wards Westernfield Mod.30. The Wards Westernfield Mod.35 is the 520 style receiver. If you look at the top and bottom where the barrel fits of each receiver style you'll see the difference. Any body want to buy a 20" Stevens Mod.520 12 gauge barrel that needs blued? Thanks, bill

You ask a question, I take the time to trace the info in my Library and give you the best answer I can ... then you tell me how wrong I am.

Well I'll be sure to drop the authors and publishers of my reference books a note and tell them that they are wrong.

I don't have one of the "blankety blank" things and if you were selling it I'd probably not give you more then $50 if it were in top condition.

Now do you have another question about an obscure firearm that you already have an answer for ... then if I'm dumber than I think I am I'll spend another hour or so trying to help you only to find out I'm wrong again. Oh yeah I did mention that possibility in my first reply, you know ... the only one you got.

And another thing ... I recently did a post on "newbies" asking about obscure things and fading out, etc., after people tried to help them. I'd been stung a couple times and was wondering if others felt the same way.

Majority of answers back confirmed that we have a commitment to help where we can and if we get "stung" that's the way it goes. Well that boosted my conviction and not 2 days later there is this.

So being a little bent out of shape I checked your profile and noted you had made 6 posts I then listed them and lo and behold in the WTB area you posted detail on the different models and even the fact that what you had was a 520A ... however in your request in the "Experts" you posted the only Brand Model that comes back as a 520 and not a 520A ... I find that very interesting, very interesting in deed.

Yep ... still steaming and at the same time sorry that I am.

Nice response to a guy trying to help Gumby. These department store gouns from the era before serial numbers were required are often impossible to date more nearly than decades. The stores mostly had no records and without serials there is simply no way to pin a firearm to a particular year. Beyond that, very often guns even with serial numbers were not produce serially so that guns number 100 and number 101 may not have even been produced in the same year.

Meaning no disrespect ContenderMan but all I asked for was a manufacturer date for the Wards Westernfield Mod.30 not a lecture on being a "newbie". As I said before, there are two distinct 520 design models, 520 and the 520"A". Both are the Browning patent "humpback" clones. As far as value, try buying one and you will find out how obsolete they really are. I'm outta here!!!!!!!!!!

What a "sweethart" ... I'll miss him so!

Of the 14 reference books I went through, two, other than Blue Book, made mention of the 520 and nothing on varriations. The Western Field M 30 economy version of the Stevens got NO print. Book value on the 520 at 90% is $125, so I'm sure the "econo clone" will be super valuable.

No to say that the 520 and it's clones are bad; they are probably very good utility shotguns. Heck Stevens did mfg. 190,000+ 520's so they must have been OK. However, Stevens/Savage firearms just don't have a collector base, they were working men's guns and work they did. Most of the older Stevens/Savage guns I see have seen a lot of hard hunting and more than likely put a lot of food on the table.

Problem in all of this is that the Poster, for reasons known only to himself, has a reference source that I and apparently several others do not have so he posts a question for which he don't even have the answer without serial number and records, but he does have knowledge of the gun. He shows that in his other post where he is trying to get a barrel. And in the "age" post he uses a model that in most cross-reference lists comes up to a Model that his gun is purportedly a varriant of ... draw your own conclusion.

I've calmed down since this morning, even chuckled a bit at his "parting shot" ... kinda like the stereotypical "brat kit" threatening to hold his breath until blue or take his marbles and go home[:D]

However, in closing this "ramble" off I do believe I can suggest a place that he can put that barrel that he bought that won't fit his 520 alphabet clone ... and there is no doubt that there's is plenty of room[}:)]
