My preference would be for Warne rings and bases. They are split vertically rather than horizontally and are near bomb proof as well as reasonable. A lot of places carry them, but Guns & Glass here on the board also has them.

Look at the Burris Signature rings. In a dual dove tail with no windage adjustment it's easy to put your scope in a bind if the rings are not lapped. The signature rings have inserts that will swivel slightly for proper fit,or you can get inserts with different degrees of offset for a proper fit. They also don't put ring marks on your scope if you ever want to remount it or sell it.I've used them up through 338 magnum with no problems due to recoil shift or looseness. They are about the same money as the Leupolds.....Good Luck...........[8D]

I too use warne rings and bases. Paid like $60 for bases and high 30mm rings. Fit and finsh are superb and they are built like a tank. Only thing that comes close would be talleys and they are expensive. At least for stuff in the price range you mentioned. There are better setups but be willing to pay at least $100 just for the rings. Have heard good and bad about burris. I hate their scopes and refuse to try their mounts. Warnes work for me and have no problem with ring marks.

Everyone has a photographic memory. Only some have film.

With the warne rings, exactly which ones do you have experience with? I looked through the brownells catalog again last night and saw that there were a number of style/models. I was looking at the Maxima bases and rings and it looked like I'd be within my budget.

The Maxima are my choice. They work well, but do need to be lapped. If you don't want to do that the Burris Signature rings would be my second choice.

Better know for sure which height rings you need or if you can exchange for the right ones. Those high dollar rings can get expensive if you end up buying 2 sets to get it right. The plain old Weaver rings are as strong as any and better than some big name jobs. You also have many more options as to placement of the scope.

I use the maximas. Have yet to need to lap a set. Just my experience. But that would not make me change brands if i did end up lapping them. They are solid well made bases and rings that stand up well to abuse. Lapping is required only if things are out of line. Have yet to run across a 700 that wasnt on the money with mounting hole alignment. And have yet to find a set of maxima bases and rings that didnt fit and work as they should.

Have many rings available from Claws mounts to conventional.
Warne Maxima, Premier, and 7.3 styles are some favotites
Maxima's look and are built just like Savage12 said, "A tank".

Buris Signatures are about as fool proof to install as I've ever seen.

And what would be wrong with the Leupolds with the adjustable windage? I have a half dozen of those and another half dozen of the identical Redfields and have hunted them as hard as you can hunt and they've never given an inkling of a problem. All of these rifles shoot .75" to 1.5" 5 shot groups at 100 yards and have for years. These would be the only bases I recommend. Not all scopes come with enough windage adjustment to take it all up in adjusting scope only. Put on some Leupold, Burris or Redfield rings and you are set up.

Not necessarily an expert but I do have a lot of field time with the above equipment.
