Double Shotgun Operating Lever
I will write the result on the inside cover of my "Blue Book" because I have known the answer to this but cannot recall it now. I'm looking at a used Stevens double (Mod 311? I think) What is the significance of "operating lever rests slightly to the right". I remember that left-right position is a wear-indicator but I don't know it goes. Thanks for any help.

Just the opposite of worn, IE: like new.
The locking surfaces are tapered, as the surfaces wear the lever has to move further toward the left to lock the barrels down.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -
an easier way to remember.....with the lever acting as the hour hand...5 oclock is good, 6 or 7 oclock is bad.

Thanks fellas. I have noted that on my BlueBook as the gray cells seem to be decreasing as the gray hairs are increasing. Surely I can remember 5:00=good/7:00=bad. Anyway my youngest son (the ultimate buyer) read your replies, was encouraged and has gone off to haggle. 0 -
keep in mind too, a good gunsmith can fix that loosness by rotating the lug and allowing the gun to wear for another 50 years on the other side. check to see if there is any sign of weld marks where he attached the jig to the lug to twist it on the outside of the receiver, cut it off, and buffed out the scar, in order to do the mod.

Thanks Bobski. I will keep that in mind as we shop. Bill said the seller was firm set on $300.00 and he wasn't ready to pay that much, but he did say that it was very nice and tight without any notable dings to the wood or metal. It is a Stevens 300B 16 ga. As always, the sound advice and informed opinions at this forum are always appreciated. 0
