armor peircing ammo is it legal to own? a friend offered me some rounds just wanted to know if it is legal to have if i took it,but i havent yet. it's 308

    Most ammo that is steel and not lead is armor piercing. Indoor shooting ranges will ask you what kind of ammo you are using, because steel ammo will blow through their steel backstop. Sometimes they have a magnet on the wall with a note that says something like "if it sticks you can't use it". You can order steel ammo through many magazines. Check your STATE laws though (or maybe see what states the magazine lists as restricted for shipping of that kind of ammo). - Toe

    Yes, no federal laws prohibiting it, but as mentioned some states prohibit it.

    Basic rule on AP is if it will chamber in a pistol it can't be sold, imported, traded commercially.

    As mentioned above, it varries from state to state...In Illinois it is not legal.

    Technically, because no US made 7.62x51 AP ammunition has ever been sold to the public through official channels, if it is US manufacture, it is stolen govt property; if from another country, no Federal regulations pertain. ATF made a lot of noise about this in the late 1970s but, as best as I can recall, didn't go out and bust anyone. In the intervening years, a lot has been offered for sale in a variety of venues and you can't go to a show or on line without seeing some offered as a collector item, if not for shooting. There are, however, several states where it is illegal to *sell* this loading and where Kalifornia does have some restrictions on ammo sales, possibly you might run afoul of state / local regulations; you will need to check the ATF site to be sure of the situation.

    Its legal to have AP rifle rounds in California.

    Pistol rounds AP ammo in California is illegal.

    I NO LONGER WORK AT THE GUNSHOP [:(]SO I DONT HAVE MY LEGAL BOOKS AVAOLABLE TO ME ANY MORE.I MOVED FROM OREGON TO WASHINGTON.
