Lee Loader for 45/70
I was just wondering if the Lee Loader kits were really all that i would need to get started reloading for my 45/70? Also I was thinking of trying some loads that are equivalent to the Federal 300 gr factory loads. Any recommendations about powder would be really helpful. Thanks, Musky

They work, but there slower than molassas in January. I started with one in 30-30, and moved up to a real press ASAP.
They use a dipper, so there is no way to "tune" the powder charge to your rifle, and the powder that someone might recogmend may not be one that Lee has sized the dipper for.
Also, the dies are not compatable with a regular press, so when you upgrade (to a press) you will have to purchase another set of dies. Check into a used reloading outfit on GB or that other auction site. In the long run I think you will be happier.
Some guys like a mag full of lead, I still prefer one round to the head.0 -

I used a Lee Loader for several years when I was a teenager. I couldn't afford a lot of components then. I had a lot more time than cash. I load a factory duplication load with a 400 gr Speer bullet and IMR 3031 powder. 3031 will work fine with a 300 gr bullet. 0 -
You certainly can do it, but the bigger cartridges take some muscle with the loaders.
Unless cash is really tight I would suggest starting with a Lee single stage press ... you can get them for under $50-60 then of course you have the cost of the dies, but you have a good platform to begin a very interesting hobby, and you can add to that platform as your cash situation permits.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
Don't waste your money the Lee Loader. I strongly recomend you look into a progressive press like the Lee Turret Press. The time you'll save loading will give you more time to shoot. 0 -
