Well, all I can tell you is that the receiverof your rifle was made in November 1943.
That was good thinking, using the "poor man's" muzzle wear gauge. I've always used a round of USGI M2 ball; commercial bullet sizes vary, so it's hard to tell how your barrel would gauge. However, since it didn't swallow the bullet, I'd guess that it is still in good shape.
I don't think that we can say much about the value without knowing every marking on the metal & wood, & seeing high quality digital photos of the entire rifle. At this point, I'd say it is probably worth at least what you paid for it, maybe more.
I'd suggest that you buy "M1 Garand 1936 to 1957" by Poyer & Riesch, available at www.scott-duff.com It's not expensive.

as said above w/o actually seeing the rifle it is hard to estimate value.
However if in average or general condition (finish good shape w/ some wear) stock no cracks or major dings and bore a clean strong bore (better be bright since the barrels are chrome lined) then based on prices in my area you paid about the going rate.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
Great find at a garage sale! For this area, the price you paid was about average, and depending on the condition of the M1, you could have gotten a great deal. 0 -
nmyers, thanks for your imput.where will i find the barrel markings,is it under the wood?i don't see anything with the wood on.

Pull the operating rod to the rear. The number on your barrel will then be visible. It should start with SA .....
