Old French Revolver Ammo
A friend just purchased a 1873 11mm French Ordinance pistol. He's looking for original ammo for it. I guess it is blackpowder ammo, and it is 11 grammes (170 grain) bullet, and .80 grammes (12.34 grains of black powder). Any help on where to look for it would be greatly appreciated. Don

Don, have never seen any repro ammo although the Donnelly book alleges the brass can be formed from .44 Mag / Spl by trimming to length and turning the rims down. Original rounds sell for $3 and up on the collector market.

You might check with Dangerous Dave at Old Western Scrounger (www.ows.com). His paper catalog list quite a bit of stuff not on his online catalog. His current catalog has your ammo. It's possible he also has some original ammo, but not in quanity to list. INQUIRE. 0 -
Don, as p3 notes, OWS can indeed supply some amazingly exotic stuff. I try to avoid pointing people in that direction if I know of any alternatives as some of their ammo is not - IMHO - the best quality (e.g., the Bertram manufactured offerings of otherwise discontinued calibers) and ALL their prices are sky high + a premium - also IMHO. In this case, one can rework common brass and use common bullets - the only portion of the project which couldn't be done by the average hand loader would be the rim diameter reduction. If I'd not sold my mini-lathe, I'd volunteer to turn out some for you. Still, if you should obtain some repro casings, they should last as long as the revolver with the mild loads which must be used . . . and if all else fails, often one can find shooting ammo and components with OWS. I've used them myself a few times over the past thirty plus years, but only as my very last resort.

Thanks to all for the replies, P3skyking, I tried the link, and ended up with a doctor's office. Anyone have the OWS phone number or another link. Thank you all for your help. I don't think my friend is going to shoot this revolver, just wants some ammo to display with it. He's more of a collector than a shooter. Don 0 -
