you can buy most of the parts seperate, but you'll probably end up paying more than buying a complete gun and selling the take-off parts.

Ruger won't sell you a new one without the stock.Even if they would it would probably be just as much money.I've customized alot of these and it's easy to get alot of money tied up in them fast. If your not sure about what you want to do the cheapest way to get a pretty good new gun is to just by the factory heavy bbl gun. They are a good value and come with a little better extractor to remove fired rounds from the tighter match chambers on the heavy bbls and a little better trigger than the sporter weight guns. Then later you can add a higher dollar hvy bbl if not satisfied. The standard sporter weight bbl gun receivers have extraction problems at times with hotter ammo when you swap to a hvy bbl with the match chamber, then it's more money to replace the extractor,etc.-- If you plan on upgrading to aftermarket trigger assembly, extractor, etc. anyway just buy a standard weight gun and swap the stock, bbl and other parts. Set the standard stock, bbl etc. off to the side to use later or sell to someone to recoup parts investment.Be forewarned that by the time you upgrade everything with good stuff you could probably by a factory Volquartsen gun.For the money the factory heavy bbl guns are a pretty good investment.-- You can buy a clean used gun as a place to start if your going to upgrade everything anyway(if you can get somebody to part with one!) --- Brownells used to sell barreled action 10-22's from Clarks (they pretty much started the 10-22 heavy bbl craze) with all the good stuff already in them. Don't know if they still do. If you want a pretty nice stock all ready to drop in try: Boyd Gunstocks @ www.boydboys.com --- Good Luck..[8D]

Good advice from tremblor ... I do a couple of these conversions each winter to keep myself busy and kick up a little extra money.

Try and come up with a used gun first ... they go for $100 to $150 and heck the Wal-Mart here sells them for $160 NEW.

As for the Stainless Steel business ... the action is not stainless it's an aluminum alloy, you can buy a black/blue action and strip it to the bare aluminum ... even the big boys like Clark do it that way.

Barrels you have a lot of choices ... probably one of the better buy is the Adams & Benett Match Chambered Stainless that is fluted and available with or without their "cool comp" compensator. If you watch Midway for sales you can nail one for under $130.00.

Next comes the trigger group, even if you watch eBay and do the work yourself the parts will run you $50-60+

Now the stock ... I hope you fellas are very good at woodworking, if not your going in the wrong direction considering the stocks available from Boyds, Fajen, etc. in the $150 to $200 range if you shop around.

By the time you are done youcan have a pretty nice "custom" at $500 or less and that includes the cost of the used starter 10/22.

Wish you luck on your project they are fun guns...stock or custom.

If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!

I bought a used 10/22 on gunbroker for $110.00 sent the action to POWER CUSTOM, complete rebuild and all titanium parts $255.00. Bought .920" dia S/S fluted target barrel for $100.00 on ************. Fajen finished stock came from EABCO at $132.00 and mounted an old 4X leupold I had around. Sold the old stock and barrel for $50.00 Total investment $547.00 and at 50 yards it will put 10 holes in a circle the size of a dime. Highly reccommended project.

Not trying to be a smart a$$ but the last stock ruger heavy bbl I got out the door for $385 plus dros fee and tax will put a full ten round clip of the cheap Federal Lightning lead ammo into less than an inch at 75yds off a bench. It shoots as good as some of the ones I've put alot of money into. -- Like I said, they are an excellent value for the money............[8D]

FWIW there is a target model 10/22 about $400 or so that is probably about as good as you will get from a custom gun. All you need to do is get a trigger job and add a scope. And perhaps that stock you are building.

I'm with mballai, I bought one of the hammer-forged factory 10/22's and it nearly shot with the several customs I had that cost 3x as much.

The 10mm - either you've got it, or you don't get it...
