Aguila IQ HP ammo?
I saw this ad in a local gun shop website, Anyone have experience with it? Can the bullet actually respond to the hardness of the target, or is this just advertising?????? How about the 1450 FPS out of a 45?

1450fps/546fpe! This new line of ammunition is loaded with the first intelligent bullet, made of an alloy (no lead) with a low specific weight. They're called intelligent bullets because they recognize the hardness of the target at the moment the projectile hits it, and in nanoseconds the projectile configures accordingly. Thus, if the target is very hard, the IQ bullet will have superior penetration while maintaining its weight and size. If the target is ballistic gelatin, it will not overpenetrate, transferring all the energy into the soft target, and breaking apart into three or four sharp fragments, each creating independent wound channels. Light weight frangible bullet. Light weight gives it the speed and the frangilility (sp?) depends on the reistance met. Pavement, masonry, plaster/drywall, glass, steel the round disintegrates quicker. Soft, fluid like (read flesh) the action is slower with more penetration and resultant wound cavity. These rounds have a very large hollow point ... barrier materials such as heavy leather or ballistic nylon, etc. will negatively impact the performance.
Just one of many defense rounds out there and my rating of this one is about the middle of the pack for both cost and permormance.

I've fired/tested both the 9 and the 45 shortly after they showed up on the market.
My real hangup w/ them is the very large hollow point. At a dollar or a little more per round they are a reasonable value.

Thanks for the info, What do you think is the best defensive ammo for the .45 or 9mm? Talking about close quarters shooting in a house. I typically load my own ammo using Hornady XTP bullets, but I am concerned with the legal issues of using ammo I produced for self defense. I have heard of some lawsuits invovling this issue. Any thoughts.

My concern, if it was not clear enough in the above posts, is that the cavity (read hollow point) can become fouled by barrier material (read heavy clothing) and adversely effect the performance of the bullet. Granted the effect is less in a frangible hollow point bullet with respect to over penetration, but it could go the other way and be an under penetration issue.
As I said before, this is NOT bad defensive ammo, it is middle of the road.
Muss - I beleive the better defensive ammo to be; RBCD, Glaser, MagSafe and HydraShock, in that order. There's a lot of stuff out there in the defensive market and more coming every day. But, whatever you do don't load your own defensive rounds because if you ever are involved in a shooting, it today's legal climate, they will come after you like a pack of rabid dogs. Use commercial stuff, just think hard before you buy stuff called "Destroyer" or marketed as "Exploding", etc. because again it boils down to the mind set of a jury as influenced by the manipulations of the prosecuting attorney. A conservative move is to use the same ammo that is used by your local LE (and before I get another hello from Michael, I don't mean the LE only stuff). If you know an officer ask them, if you don't inquire at local gun shops and/or ranges.

There was NO mention of WHY you didn't like the large hollow point (read hole in the head) but only that your, "real hangup w/ them is the very large hollow point." That's all, nothing as to WHY you had a problem with that. But now you have explained your previous post in responce to my question about said post. Now, if it is not clear enough in this post, you're an a$$.

The fella was asking a simple question to which you certainly are entitled to an opinion ... just state what that opinion is on the subject at hand.
If you want to call me an "A##" that's fine do a seperate post, do several ... but don't confuse a ligitimate request for info. with the ranting and raving from the "Middle of Nowhere". And, read all of the replies in the order given then you may have a better picture of what's goin on. Now go work on some nice posts slamming me, get a real stemwinder goin ... I'll enjoy the humor.
