The new springfield M1A 16" barrel
Hello Ya'll
I just saw in the NRA mag, where springfield is
bringing out the M1A Ssocom with a 16 inch barrel.
My question, is this to short a barrel to do the 7.62
round justice? Will I lose to much in the way of
accuracy? Or is this the perfect urban combat rifle?
How about it guys? Or should I stick to the 18 inch
scout or standard 22 inch. Your thoughts?

I own and shoot both the standard model and brush model M1As, both are accurate, but I think a 16" will have too much muzzle blast, and yes will loose about 300fps OVER my 22" model. If your'e going to do tunnel rat duty there in the big city, yes, a 16" would be good, wear ear plugs. Other than that, go full size, you only really need even a 18" in tight brush, thick trees and jungle. The extra velocity you obtain with the full length barrel might be needed to penetrate steel doors, flak vests, built up positions, etc. Keep us posted on what you get.

Just a case of Springfield trying to stay with the times by building something that resembles a current military weapon. They perceive a market for these.
I you see your primary use in an Urban, CQB situation then it might be right for you. Same would be true if you want to project that image. Your money spend it the way you see fit. But there are tradeoffs in performance, but they may make no difference to your situation/use. If your not sure, split the difference and go w/ the 18inch.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
The marketing people at SA Inc are hoping that your testosterone will cloud your good judgement.
There is no good reason for taking a near-perfect high-power battle rifle & chopping a few inches off of it. This new rifle is of no more value than the so-called "tanker" M1 rifle. Like packrat said, the muzzle blast will be quite unpleasant; and, what will you have gained?
I don't see the military or police lining up to buy this rifle. There are better choices if you are seeking the perfect urban combat rifle.

I suspect that SA is trying to make something that appeals to those AR15 users who want something more potent caliber wise. It's probably too soon to see if LE or military groups line up for it. Long gun users take an equally long time to adapt to a new trend.
Short barrels aren't less accurate. Velocity loss is real. Muzzle blast may or may not be an issue--certainly not much compared to the Scout 18--but more than the full 22.
