Oil or Grease for the M1 Garand
Here's a newby question. What oil or grease is best used for the M1 Garand that I have? How good is the Outers Gun Oil (rust prevention) or the Remington REM Oil? By the way, the Winchester .30-06 Springfield 147 gr FMJ shoots really great.

When I was in the service, they use to issue us little plastic containers of yellowish colored grease to lube are M 1's.
It looked just like the Luberaplate grease that you can buy in the auto parts stores. Seems to me that that a can of that stuff will last you for years. Your not supposed to put a whole lot of it on, just a little in the high friction/wear areas.

Oklahoma, rufe's ansmer on the Lubriplate is right on, it is basically the same grease that the military used. The places to lube are the raceway that the operating rod slides along on th right side of the receiver, the bolt lugs and recesses, the top rear of the bolt(because I've learned from experience that is one place that wears the finish off fast--(means it is making metal to metal contact), and ther is usually a contact area that the operating rod makes some contact with the barrel--lube this spot also. BAsically any spot on any semi-auto that has a contact point (metal to metal) where one piece is sliding on or making contact with another should always have grease not oil. There may be exceptions to this(inside of the gas tube for instance but my motto has always err on the side of too much grease until experience tells you better. If you put too much grease on one of these contact points the rifle will usually just push it out of the way or throw it off. I have found Break Free CLP to be an excellent oil to the point that that is the only oil I use right now. It does a very good job of oiling and protecting blued and parkerized surfaces. Hope this helps--Pinhead Aim Small, Hit Small 0 -

I doubt if any here would disagree. Good luck.

Whats next? A ban on automatic transmissions?0 -
Follow the advice on the link and if you go to gun shows, generally there will be one or more sellers with genuine US grease pots for sale at reasonable prices.
