Oh Boy...do I need some insight!!
Hello "Ask the Experts"....
This place lends me advice, insight and expertise....and a broad spectrum of opinions. These are all something I need right now...and I thank you ahead of your answer!
For those who don't know me...I'm an FFL, ex-LE and an NRA Instructor but I learn something new EVERY DAY.
Here's my question....another FFL was putting forth the argument that Remington UMC ammo that he sold was of better quality that the lower priced ammo of the same name at WallyWorld. He went on to say that the Marlin and Mossberg long guns at Wally were of lesser quality.
Now, I know that there is no competing with the "loss leaders" at Wally and the like....but is ANY of what he said even close to true? He went on to say that the UMC was made in China and his was USA made!!
I still have a scruple or two left and I want to hang on to them even if I should buy my ammo at Wally and re-sell it...........What do YOU think!!???
Thanks alot!
Jim

this is what i know to be true. one of my friendly competitors bought some redfield rings and bases from wal-mart that was on clearence. ok. when he got back to his store he was opening up some of them and noticed that some of the screws and such were missing. on a closer inspection, he noticed a printing on the boxes that stated PACKAGED FOR WAL-MART. another instance was,i had a NEF pardner 20 ga. in my shop that came from on of my wholesalers. i also had another one just like it that came from wal mart that a customer brought in for repairs. the bluing on the wal-mart gun was not as good as the other.another instance was a few yrs. back, a mother brought a new rifle in that was purchased for her son as a gift, from wal-mart, it would not feed from the clip. one more instance was a month or so back a young man brought a rem 11-87 into the shop. when i saw it i asked did it come from wal-mart or academy? his answer was acedemy and HOW did you know? i said, the bluing. I would seriously doubt that!! I can't say for sure but I wouldn't belive it. A guy tried to tell me the same thing about the Motorcraft(Ford) and AC Delco(GM) oil filters that K-Mart and Walmart sell. They are about 1/3 the price the dealer charges.

Very interesting. "Look out for falling prices"! Today I heard the host of a radio talk show express the opinion that Wal Mart is the greatest front for, and contributor to, the Communist Chinese economy. Of course the Chinese do have a weapons industry, but since the ban on Chinese AK ammo, I have seen very little Chinese-made ammo of any description on the market. This info is kind of dated, but back in the late '80s a friend was using .45 ACP Rem UMC ammo and found that it didn't work reliabily in some of his auto pistols. We determined that the rim was just a little undersized resulting in failures to extract. We found that it was being produced in Brazil, but it wasn't long before the situation had been corrected. It may well be that it is still foreign made by the low bidder. In the situation I have related I was the beneficiary of several boxes of his fired brass which I reloaded for my Colt and S&W 1917 revolvers where, secured in half-moon clips, it worked just fine. As for Wal Mart receiving and selling seconds in the firearms dept., this is a persistent rumor. Being a dealer myself, I do not find it necessary to shop there for firearms, and in fact dislike the place in general; but I have had friends who bought guns there with about a 50/50 rate of satisfaction. I know you fellows like to save money, but I'm pretty sure that Wal Mart isn't really on your side on the gun rights issue, and you should probably take your business elsewhere.[:)] 0 -
Wally World is a mass marketer ... they don't just by truck loads they buy warehouse loads and to get their business you better have the best prices.
Can they get ammo and firearms at rock bottom prices, you bet. Can they legally sell seconds as firsts ... NO and in this day and time I find it hard to believe that they would even try.
Since "Sams" death the stores have definately gone down in appearance, customer service, and even general cleanliness, but I don't think the "B" school boys that are running it now are scamming the customers ... heck they're making to much money straight up, and the law suits would really hurt them.
Imagine the headlines ... "Wally World" sells defective factory second firearm as fisrt quality and Mortimer J. Snerd has gun blow up in his face ....
Ammo is the same.
Little dealers are being squeezed to death by the big guys ... just no way to get the same prices. Heck I've got friends that pay more for stuff "wholesale" than the big boys sell it for. Sure I like bargains, but I also like the small shops/dealers so I try and spread my business around and I encourage others to do the same before all the small independents are gone.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
I was told a little tale about Planters? peanuts. That the peanuts Wallyworld sells are subquality compaired to other retail outlets. That they contain burnt, undersized, and misshaped. The taste is somewhat different also.
I tried some. I believe there may be truth to the story. Judge for yourself. I no longer by my Planters? peanuts at Wallyworld.0 -
I don't buy anything from Walley World. Even though it's cheaper and I ain't rich, they are destroying the "American Dream". Before long the folks who used to own small shops and busineses will be sweeping floors and cleaning crapers at Walley World. What a dream life. Just my .5 cents worth.[:p] 0 -
If you were a manufacturer or distributor, wouldn't you want to sell at Wal-Mart? Sure, it means selling at half price to them, but it also means selling four times the quantity.
Now, would you want ALL THAT merchandise sold at Wal-Mart to be sub-standard just so you could sell a smaller quantity of "good" product to a select few at another retailer?0 -
30 years ago, long before Walmart became a retailing giant, there were similar discussions about gun "seconds" being sold at the larger discount stores. And, we had the same anecdotal stories & the same inability of anyone to find a "smoking gun" that proved either sides theory one way or the other.
Little that we buy today is as we think it is. Almost all manufacturers make products under multiple names for many retailers & distributors. Some even make different quality products using the same name & model #. We take our chances with anything we buy.
I don't buy guns at big box stores. But, more than once, I've gotten a defective gun NIB from a major gun distributor. Competition is so tough that quality control is secondary; it doesn't matter if it is a $150 Remington .22 or a $1,500 SA Inc M14-clone.

its an open market on seconds in the business world. do you think those big companies dont a have a way to sell off their mistakes? its a known fact hong kong is where japan dumps their rebuilds and defective cameras. dont you think usa does too? secrets are designed to profit until caught. and the fine is usually less than the profit made, thus the compnaies profit in the gamble until caught. ever wonder why demigraphics are so important in marketing? i/e: billybob in the hills of tenn could note a defect in a rifle faster than a bro in d.c. thus, sell those cheap guns in d.c.. follow me? does your true gun buyer really shop wally? no. thus, they sell those bad boys in wallyworld. anyway, not to be the bad guy but this a is a general discussion. lets move it over to there and stay techno. regards.....

I believe the old adage "buyer beware" and "you get what you pay for" still hold true. Buying guns, ammunition, or component equipment, you just have to look at it, ask the right questions, and then go with it. 0 -
I can tell you that I have had similar experiences with "Name Brand" products sold at large chain stores. I work in the constuction industry and I can tell you for a fact that the products purchased at the huge "Home Improvement" stores are of lesser quality.. Example: ...homeowner purchases 15 gal. of "Gliddon" paint for his new house at a huge home improvement store. After 5, count em, 5 coats of paint the walls still looked like they were painted with milk. I contacted the "Gliddon" factory rep. After checking the numbers on the 5 gal. bucket his responce was "I can't tell you what is in this paint. This is a special mix made only for ......." Next time you go to a REAL tool supply house, check the model numbers and amps and all of the specs. on a certain power tool , then go to your discount chain and look for the same model number. I have seen the same power tool with the same model number with diff. specs. Check it out. 0 -
Back to gunhawke's original post he said that the wally world umc's were made in China, I have a box of umc 38 specials in my hand right now from there that says made in usa! But I guess they could print that in china too huh? 0 -
I have a Savage hvy bbl 223 and shoot Winchester 45 gr hp, Winchester/Israeli 55 gr fmj and just recently shot some UMC 55gr fmj.
The 45's and the winchester 55's shoot sub 1" groups with sub 1/2" groups not uncommon. Both shoot to the same POI. The UMC can't consistently hit the 3" bull and the groups are 2 to 3 ". The UMC was bought at Bass Pro .
