    woodchuck, welcome aboard!

Nominal case length on the .45-60 WCF is 1.89", OAL 2.15" . . . I presume you will form cases from .45-70 brass. The original rounds are collector items these days and I would be most hesitant to use brass from these loads.

When I loaded this round, I used smokeless equivalents of the BP loading, but I will not suggest any alternatives to the original BP loads (in deference to the avaricious members of ATLA) nor do I have any suggestions on the primers.

Thanks for the help. I'll soon be shooting my old '76
I've had her for thirty years and only fired four rounds that a friend loaded for me.

I've been shooting my 1882 manufactured Winchester 1876 in .45-60 with commercial light smokeless loads purchased from Ten-X Ammunition (they specialize in Cowboy Action Shooting loads and other obsolete ammo). I too would like to start loading my own, but am lacking loading data. Could someone please provide information for some light smokeless powder loads for this caliber? Thank you.

Here are a couple of commercial reloaders for 'obsolete' cartridges:

    Cast bullet resources:

I thought that this was just cool:

"Here is a nice example of the rare and interesting Lyon and Boyd tool. Our own director, Tom Quigley, recently reported on a survey of these tools in which he summarized the attributes of about 25. In that survey, he noted only one in 45-60 caliber. Interestingly, another 45-60 recently showed up on our message board; a nice example of how sharing information helps develop the information base upon which we all depend for enjoyment of our hobby. Tom's article may be found in The Gun Report, volume 48, number 5 (October 2002), p. 34-43. In addition to the survey of tools, he provides much interesting background information on the makers, and patent documents are also presented."

And for those that want the Lyman Cast Bullet Mold Number list, here it is: http://sixgunner.com/absolutenm/anmviewer.asp?a=13&z=57
