Remington Serialization
My Remington Model 12C (.22 Slide Action), SN 1565xx, has "RW" stamped above the serial number.
The Blue Book serialization section shows Alpha characters coverted to month/year.
Does the first or second letter indicate the month?? I'm guessing the mfg date is November 1928 instead of August 1924.

The year is the last letter. This would indicate that your gun was made in 1928. But the 156XXX serial number would have been made in 1912 which was before the date code business started. It could have had the barrel replaced or some other explanation for which I am at a loss to come up with. There were 831,737 of these guns made over 28 years. I have a 12B gallery special serial number 219XXX that has no date code on it. Date codes started in 1922. 0 -
Interesting info. Thanks.
The serial number and "RW" are stamped on the bottom of the receiver just forward of the trigger guard. Is your info stamped on the barrel?
If the year of mfg is really 1912, I'm even more amazed at the 99% condition of this rifle. BTW, it has an octagonal barrel.
What is your reference for the year of mfg?
Thanks,

A-37...
The "RW" above the serial number stands for (I believe) "Remington Works".
The two letter date code will be found on the left side of the barrel right in front of the frame. The first letter denotes the year... for 1924 it will be an "R", and 1928 is a "W". The second letter indicates the specific month of manufacture. "RW" would indicate August 1924 if that turns aout to be the date code.

There is no date of mfg code stamped on the barrel (other than patent dates) so it appears that "remroc" is correct in stating that my rifle is pre-1922.
To further complicate matters, there is no "Model 12" stamp on the rifle. If I list it on GB, maybe I can't even correctly call it a Model 12C.0 -
I missed the part about the RW being by the serial number. Bert H is correct in that this is not a date code. No one knows for sure what the RW is but as Bert said the best anyone can come up with is Remington Works. Most early model 12s were not marked as such. This is pretty common throughout the Remington line. The "C" version has an octagonal barrel. 0 -
Thanks for the assistance, gentlemen.
If I list the rifle as a "Model 12C, pre-1922", it will be an accurate description. In fact, if a potential buyer asks, I can refer any concerns about model and year of mfg to this post.0
