most common competition O/U
For those of you who shoot trap, skeet, or clays, what is the most common O/U used in competitions? I would like to hear about shotguns that can be had for 1600 new, 900 used, or less. Also, what is the most common semi-auto? How about barrel length and chokes?
Thanks for your time.

American Trap only requires one shot. However doubles trap needs two shots, Skeet takes two, sporting clays needs two.
I personally would not shoot the same gun at all four games. They are just two differant.
Trap: modified or full choke and 32" to 34" barrel (distance 30 yards +).
Skeet: Skeet or cylinder chokes 24" to 28" barrels (distance about 20 yards).
Sporting Clays: Distance varies greatly chokes vary from cylinder to full. Barrels range from 26" to 30".
Find a gun that fits. Try the differant games and see what you like. Most shooters will allow you to try their gun (of course ask first).
For trap I have seen everything from old pump guns to the high dollar guns used effectivly by differant shooters. For the most part it is the shooter, not the gun.
Practice, practice, practice.

As far as make, something in a Browning Citori, Sporting clays or other edition for clays in 28 to 30" is most common here in the midwest. The Berettas are second. Not sure on the trap circuit, tho, again the Brownings are most prevalent here. The Browning Gold auto is probably coming on fast here, followed by the Beretta 390's and variants for both clays and trap. For skeet, most go with a lighter, shorter gun usually 26 or 28". Some also seem to do well with the Ruger.
Alpine has it right, tho. It's not so important what you shoot, but how confident and proficient you are with it. A lot of powder and shot will be more important, to a degree than make. Find one that fits you and that you like rather than what someone else likes.
That, and what you can afford so you are able to shoot it a lot. It doesn't do much to have an expensive gun if you don't have the bucks to shoot it on a regular basis. I've seen just about every age and description, cost, ect. at the line. It still comes down to the guy pulling the trigger.0 -
The most common ones I see whenever I used to (and to a lesser extent still) see are the Browning Citori for O/U and Remington 1100's for semi-autos. 0 -
Is there a censoring of some words automatically on these boards in any context? My post said compebreastion not compebreastion. I think this was altered, I may have had a Freudian slip once but not in the breastle and the post. It makes the post look rather silly, eh? 0 -
citori, bar none.

I read my last response and answered my question regarding censorship, it seems kind of ridiculous since all of the members here seem to be mature. oh well. 0 -

The Browning citori, cynergy, and lightnings don't fit me. Only the 525 field does feel right of the Brownings I have shouldered. the sport model of the Beretta 391 doesn't fit but the normal 391 urika does. DO the field or "lower" grade models have any differences other than stock shape and use of different materials on the reciever and stocks? Will I just save money by buying the less expensive model that fits and points naturally, or are there some advantages or beneficial options on the the higher models within the same shotgun label (i.e. Beretta 686E vs. 682E or 391 optima vs. 391 trap)? 0 -
you didnt ask what gun fits you. you asked what was the most common gun in the clay sports. grade of gun is to distinguish finish and art. since a shotgun is an extension of your eye, the gun must fit regardless of the cost or brand. shoulder a gun and ask the seller to hide the price tag. matter of fact, do it blind folded and let the seller hand you gun after gun so you wont have bias. when you find the gun that feels perfect, open your eyes and buy it. who cares what it costs? it fits and its what you wanted in the first place. follow my logic? just make sure your eye is in line with the rib and beads automtically. trust me, i have fit 1000's of people to guns properly this way, and they were glad i did.
