    cody,
Although some will disagree, the first book I grab is
the "Gun Traders Guide".I get mine at Walmart. There is
also the "Blue Book of Gun Values" which I keep handy and
seems to be "the Bible" for most folks. There are several
others, but you may want to visit your local book store. They
usually have a variety to choose from. Those that are a year
or so old serve the purpose well, since values normaly don't
change much from year to year and are offered at dicounted
    prices.

    Good luck
    Oh yeah,Welcome to the board.

    For general values:

    Blue Book of Gun Values
    Gun Trader's Guide
    Standard Catalog of Firearms
Flayderman's Guide to Antique American Firearms.

These you can generally get at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/ or Barnes & Noble: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/ . For books on particular manufacturers of firearms, Ray Rilling Armsbooks is a good source. http://www.rayrilingarmsbooks.com/cgi-bin/rrb455.cgi

For age, it's a bit tougher. In some cases there are lists of various makes and models of firearms with the dates of manufacture by serial numbers. The back of the Blue Book gives a number of those lists.

For a number of other firearms, particularly military guns, there are a number of collector websites that give that, and even more detailed, information.

For some other firearms, all you'll be able to find out is that a particular model was made (for example) from 1922 to 1942.

Best place to start? Right here at "Ask The Experts".

You'd be suprised at the number of firearms reference books that most Libraries carry, or through inter-library sharing arrangements that can be ordered in for folks that have relatively small libraries in their town.

You can look at the different publications available and see which one or ones best fits your needs ... then go buy the current edition of that book.

If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!
