Please rate the quality of three ammo brands.
I use these for the Ruger 10/22 rifle and will be using them for the Remington 597. What are your thoughts and experiences for all three brands for .22LR for both rifles. and also, what about for pistols like the Taurus PT22 and the Ruger KP4 22/45?
Remington .22 Thunderbolts.
Federal .22
CCI Stingers.

On a scale of 1 to 10 these 3 rate about a 4 or less.
However having said that, to get the best performance out of a 22 you must buy one box of as many different brands,(types) as you can find and bench test 5 or 10 rds in each gun to get the best results for that gun. Or the best brand for the type of use your going to use it for.0 -
CCI (Minimags) I love. My favorite. $3.50 per 100 @ CTD.com
Have not shot the Stingers.
Federal makes a lot of ammo. Federal "Lighting" (#510) are 40gr solid lead. O.K., but even better, are their American Eagle 38gr. copper coated (AE22). Both are rated "high velocity.
Remington .22 Thunderbolts do not agree with my Buckmark, plus they misfire frequently, compared to AE22 (1/200, if that).

I shoot the CCI minimag in my 597. Excellent results!

Have had trouble with the Rem. thunderbolts cycling semi-auto in both types of guns. Save them for bolts and pumps. The CCI's are to hot for some of the "Match" chambers in the heavy 10-22 bbls and don't always extract with the factory extractors. I've had good luck with the Federals in both guns (The rifles). -- My two cents...............[8D]
Can't help with the pistols.0 -
fergusonmorse392 hit the nail on the head. I don't know why but a 22 gun is the MOST ammo sensitive of any weapon. Try as many different kinds as you can for each gun. What works well in one may not in the next.

I to shoot CCI minimags in my 597 it won't cycle Thunderbolts. 0 -
Try different ammo. Of the 3 you listed I would put CCI at the top, followed by Federal in No. 2
Of course w/ that said if your rifle will function OK with the Thunderbolt buy them for blastin because you can run across them at $8 a brick (regular $9.60 at Wal-Mart here) and that's a bargain. Who cares if there is an occassional misfire, if your only makin' cans or trashpile rats dance .......
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
None of these are considered anything terribly special. The Remington and Federal rounds are pure plinking fodder, the MiniMags claim to fame is their slightly higher velocity. As others have noted, you will need to experiment to find which loading any particular firearm prefers. I've seen several instances where standard factory ammo performed as well as, and sometimes better than, "match" ammo in a given gun. It seems the difference is most pronounced in rifles in general (although especially semi-autos) and semi-auto target pistols. The finer the tuning of the weapon, the more sensitive it seems to be to slight variations in load . . . guess that is a big "duh," eh? I know some .22 shooters who, if they find a given lot of some brand will perform well in their semi-auto pistol, buy several cases of that particular lot. When they begin to run low, they start looking again. They insist the lot to lot variations within a brand are great enough to notice. Can't prove it by me, but I don't shoot matches, either.

For the average non-competeing 22 shooter, or for the amateur competitor/plinker/hunter, there is really only three brands and models of .22lr that you need.
Federal Lightning- because its the cheapest stuff on the market and it shoots better than most stuff that five bucks more. The best plinking around rimfire ammunition available.
Federal UM900 Gold Metal- works in just about everything, and accurate, yet affordable. Use for seeing how good your gun can shoot or for shooting the local match. This stuff will literally cut your group size in half compared to average store brand ammo. If you don't believe me, then buy and box and try it.
CCI Stinger- This is about the most powerful .22lr ammo on the market. The only other ammo that I've seen that even compared to is on ballistic charts was... Well I don't remember, but this is the best. Produces the more ft lbs of energy between 0-100yds than any other that I've seen. Use it for hunting, or if you carry a .22lr, then put it in your gun.
I usually buy bulk. I get the federal lighting from a local sporting goods store for $7.90 a box. I bought two full cases last time. Then I bought one store pack of CCI Stinger. I ordered two bricks of Federal Gold Medal from JG Sales. I don't know how much I have left, but I've been shooting off it for a little while. I still will go buy different brands of ammo just to see how it shoots, but I haven't found anything better.0
