G&A does articles occasionally and sees how many shoots can be fired without the gun malfunctioning.
Seems like a silly thing to do though with a personal firearm.0 -
Why would you WANT to fire a lot of rounds without cleaning it? To me, it just sounds like a disaster waiting to happen...
I've got a couple guns (I can think of at least 2, but 10/22's) with well over 100,000 rounds through them with very little malfunctions, but I cleaned 'em often!0 -
i believe john brownings military trials 1911 still holds the record.

I hear people brag about this figure with their guns and can't for the life of me figure out why they're doing this. The number of rounds fired without a malfunction is one thing, but the number fired without cleaning is pointless.
In my opinion, reliable means it's capable of digesting 200-300 rds. of any factory ammo of the correct caliber without malfunction or stopping for maintenance.
Even if you're readying for a SHTF scenario, the ability to shoot this amount of ANY ammunition far outweighs the ability to shoot several thousand rounds without cleaning.0 -
I agree. Pointless. It's like seeing how long your car will last without ever changing the oil. Why would you care?

Weapons are designed to be maintained and NOT to be abused for the sake of bragging rights. Any weapon that can cycle 5000 rounds without any cleaning or maintenance must have been built with tolerances so loose as to not need a responsible owner. Sorry to the proponents of plastic, but I am no Glock fan. The glock defines loose tolerances in a pistol. Just look at what they do to brass with their huge, unsupported chambers. If you abuse a weapon that you personally own, how do know it won't fail when you need it?

Other than meeting or exceeding design/bid specifications torture testing a gun makes not the first bit of sense. As marketing data there is a place, and/or if your a gun mag with column inches to fill comparing the "boomo 321 to the banga 123" or some other such word spinning where the publication or manufactures is picking up the tab for the gun and ammo.
As an individual you go out, you probably work to earn the money to buy the gun, and then you see how quickly you can break it ... only answer I would have to that is ... "stupid is as stupid does"
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
Actually there is value in seeing how many rounds a gun will digest before malfunction. This is primarily a concern for those in combat--guns get dirty and may not be maintained by the combatant.
I believe any full size gun should be able to go at least 500 rounds without a failure. Small carry guns should be able to do around 250 rounds. Anyone who has been through a multi-day training class will see a whole lot of guns choke with just a few boxes.
