Browing Hi Power Grips

In the past there have been references to the color on the inside of the Browing Hi Power grips.

What are the colors and significance of this?

  The "Only" factory applied color was red.
  This was done from nearly the beginning of the history of P35/Hi Power.
  The Germans did not take the time to paint the interior of the grips after the take over of the Herstal plant.
  It was resumed after the war and continued through the 70's.
  After newer and better varnishes and wood treatments were discovered the practice was discontinued.
  The reason and only reason it was ever used was to prevent moisture absorbtion and thusly to prevent warping of the grips.
