New Shotgun
has anybody else had problems with the tristar tsa cammo 3.5 autoloader?

Like I need another shotgun. I've got some I'll never shoot, but you know how it is; I need one of these.
I just blasted and painted an 870 and an 1100. The 870 has a Hastings barrel with chokes, but the 1100 has a fixed choke barrel which got me to thinking. Should I buy a new barrel for my 1100 or buy a late model shotgun? That's the question.
I hear a lot about the Beretta (391), but I'm not a fan of the safety in front of the trigger so that's out. My buddy shoots a Benelli M1 field that is breech loud, clappy (loose barrel, stock, and forend), always jamming (he doesn't take care of it), and is way to light for my liking. I've heard people bragg Benelli's Super Black Eagle up, but after being around that M1 I'm not sure. I know they use the Benellis a lot down below on the dove front because of the gas free operation they can shoot thousands of rounds with little maintenance. Franchi makes a gas gun, but I don't know much about it. The new Super X two is supposed to be something else. Winchester hasn't built anything decent since my model 12, but that Mossy Oak Waterfowl creation looks pretty intriguing. I hear a lot of complaints about the Browning golds. In fact everyone I know who has one, had one, because they couldn't ditch them fast enough. I'm leaning toward the Winchester, but I haven't held one yet.
What do you guys think? Is there something else I should look at? In the event that I should purchase the Super X, where's a good place as far as price?

When you decide what you want, put it in a search here at GB, save the search, check the email notification, and you're set. Sooner or later you'll find one here.

Hum..
go to GunParts.com and search for an 1100 bbl. About 6 months ago,I picked up a used 1100 26" target bbl with rem choke for $90.[;)]0 -
You can also have choke tubes installed in the bbl that you already have pretty reasonably if you are so inclined.......[8D] 0 -
I thought the the screw in choke idea would be cost prohibitive compared to buying a barrel that's already dialed. Where might one learn of a competent smith that could perform such a task at a reasonable rate. The so called smiths in this area are hacks.
My buddy owns a machine shop and we do some amazing things in the shop. We might be able to complete such a task if I knew where to get the proper taps, reamers, and or hones required. Is this performed in the lathe or in the mill or by hand?
Please explain.

You can buy the reamers and tap from:

Or there are others.
A machinist should be able to do a better job than the run of the mill gunsmith.
A guage set costs about $120. But before you buy any set make sure the barrel will accept either a thin tube or regular choke tube. There is a differance.

be careful folks, take it from me, read my background and believe me....some of those older 1100's dont have enough metal to accept screw ins. it all depends on how accuratley remington bored the bbl. sometimes they were off center and you wont have enough metal to engage new threads all the way around the bore interior. when you get a screw in kit, the FIRST warning is to measure your bore before cutting. there IS a GO-NO GO max and minimum for it to be first considered safe. newer 1100's and 11-87's were built with thicker bbl walls to accept threads. in my opinion, for the hassle to thread a bbl, its cheaper to buy an extra bbl ready to go! $90 @ gunparts? cant beat it folks. none of my guns have screw ins and im a former world champion. and how often do you change a choke on the actual range or in a blind while birds are landing? time it someday. you can change a bbl just as fast as a choke. your duck blind lunch probably weighs more than an extra bbl being dragged to the blind. and most gun cases were built for that extra bbl anyway. just think of all the hands that extra bbl had to go thru to be ok'ed for sale out the factory! yet, only one does for your bbl screw ins. buy a bbl!

Humbolt, Remington was involved in a class action lawsuit several years ago, 80's, I think. They lost the suit and had to replace a lot of barrels that were alledgedly made of inferior steel. My 1100 was one of those whose serial number fell within the range of the recall/repalcement. I kept my barrel for orginiality and bought one of the new light contour barrels to use. I spent my career in manufacturing and I well understand what your raw material suppliers can do to you(somtimes un-intended) regardless of how tight you draw up your purchase specs.. FIRST check with Remington to see if your barrel falls within this recall. It may or may not be safe--err on the side of safety. I was at the skeet range one evening late and an older gentleman showed to wanting to shoot a round of skeet just to try out his new light weight 20 gauge Remington 1100. On station 2 a couple of us noted that in the evening light(about twilight) his barrel was winking at us. We asked him to stop and took his 1100 into better light to check it and sure enough there was a very thin split from just ahead of the chamber all the way to just behind the front sight. We advised him to take the shotgun back to the shop where he purchased it and let them send it back to Remington with a letter of explanation. Funny thing was, he had shot 6 or 7 birds so far and had not missed but one bird. Go figure. Don't know what ever came of the shotgun because we never saw him again. Which way you go(new barrel or reaming for chokes) is more of a personal thing than anything else(after checking with Remington of course). Personally I really like the new contour barrels myself.
