New barrel & stock for 300 wsm?
I was thinking about putting a new barrel on a SS Model 70 300 wsm I have. Also was thinking about getting a new stock in place of the cheap one the gun came with. I've heard talk of Hart barrels and McMillan stocks but wanted to see what some of you guys have used before. I think the gun weighs around 7 1/2 pounds without the scope right now and wouldn't mind adding a little weight to it but I would like to keep it on the lighter side for what I'll be using it for. Thanks for the help

McMillan is without peer and Hart certainly amongst the best of the best.
I'd be MUCH suprised to learn of a 7.5lb all up Winchester,in as-issued configuration. Their receivers are pretty heavy,as are the stocks and most barrel contours are far from svelte. Most mounting systems are going to crowd 4 ounces and most scopes are on the other side of 11 ounces.
All of that combined,is on the FAR side of 7.5lbs.
McMillan offer numerous stock pattern options,as well as fill weight variations, within those ranks. Pick a pattern that fits you well, opt the Sporter fill weight and a Decelerator. Keep your barrel contour under a #4(I like a 24 incher on the 300WSM) and it will offer high precision at a modest all up weight, while managing recoil nicely.
I put my S/S Classic 300WSM in a McMillan Classic patterned handle(Sporter fill weight and decelerator) and retained the issued barrel. It shot well and had very modest recoil. Much to be said for good stock design and it's ability to fend felt recoil.
Touching briefly upon your replacement tube,I tend to employ a twist rate of latitude. On a 30,I favor a 1-10" for pursuits(projectiles) of interest to me.
Your mileage may vary................0 -
Geez Stick. Surprised you didnt mention the pac-nor barrels. But as stated, the harts are among the best. And the macs are without equal. Wonder if we should intro these guys to the beauty of swirlys? After I get tired of my laminated stock, the 280Ai will wear one.
Everyone has a photographic memory. Only some have film.0 -
Big Stick,
What I was saying is without the bases, rings, and scope the gun weights about 7 1/2 lbs. That's what winchester advertised it as and I weighed it and it was right at that. I'm not too concerned with the weight as long as it is balanced. But I'll be using up in the mountains and would like it to stay somewhat on the lighter side.
Thanks for the input on the barrel size and stock. That really helps.0 -
For the tasks you mention,I'd opt the McMillan G&H pattern in Sporter fill and do a #2 contour at 24 inches.
But I'm partial to modest contours and likely again enjoy the minority there.
A guy totes a Hunting Rifle a helluva bunch more than he shoots it during Season. I have a 22" S/S Model Seven 7SAUM with alloy Talley's a Leupie 6x42 and a McMillan Mountain Rifle patterned stock, that weighs 7.25lbs all up.
I tote it instead of my longer/heavier 300WSM...................0
