I was just given this old musket. There are no markings, dates, numbers, cartouches, anything on it. It appears to be very old; ie, 150 years or older. It might have been converted from a flintlock. It is @56 inches long with a 1.25 diameter octagonal barrel with a 3/8 inch diameter octagonal bore, wooden ramrod, it appears to have a shell for a front sight. Curved brass buttplate, brass ovals on front part of stock, one with a horizontal slit in it. Can email pics as I don't know how to post them. It is also very heavy, 15 or 16 pounds. rear sight is a semicircular iron sight open at top. If you need to see pictures email me at biglynn@wnclink.com Any information on age or origin would be greatly appreciated as I currently know nothing about this firearm.

Sounds more like an old rifle than a musket, they are usually lighter weight and thinner barrelled, with larger bores.

Rifle with back action lock was never a flint. Date from 1840-70. Long heavy barrel and small bore probably makes it an eastern rifle rather than what some call a plains or mountain rifle. If all of the piece is as good as seen in the photos, this is a very good collectible. Value $500 plus minus 25% (my onageristic guestimate). Something of a rarity to see an old piece such as this that someone hasn't tried to "improve" in in some way. Best leave it as-is, uncleaned, unrestored, untouched.
