Need some info. Any Mauser Guru's?
I recently aquired a Mauser barreled action. It is in 30-06, and on the front ring in a circle, it has Columbia, and under that, it has Fuerzas Militares. 2+2 tells me it was for the Columbia Military, The the 30-06 barrel, is of a sporter taper, and has a few stampings on it. There is a X over a crown, over a lion, over the letters P.V in one stamping, and another stamping that is oval shaped, and has the letter E over Lg, over a star. On the left side of the action, it says Fab.Nat.D'Armes de Guerre Herstal-Belgique. There is also the number 30 at the rear of the reciever I believe I read somewhere, that other countries would buy old military arsenals, and rebarrel to different calibers. Is this what I have? In the world of many Mauser's, how does this one rate in quality. I'm not totally Mauser illiterate, but can't find it in a few reference books. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Don

SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE A COLOMBIAN M-98 WITH A COMERCIAL (F.N.) BARREL. 0 -
Sounds like you have an FN sporter barrel mated to an FN military action. If the bore is nice and you want to spend the $s, you have the makings of a very nice quality sporter.

COLOMBIAN FN MODEL 1950 SHORT RIFLE / MAUSER ACTION
in the early 1950`s, FN delivered an unknown number of new rifles chambered for the U.S. cartridge .30-06, at wich time many of the earlier contract FN weapons were converted at COLOMBIAN govt arsenals to the same caliber / cartridge. the MODEL 1950 SHORT RIFLE is a robust piece, with a pistol grip stock, and an upper hand gaurd running from the reciever ring to aprox. 1 inch beyond the lower BBL band. the upper and lower bands are retained by seperate springs, with a swivel on the bottom of the lower band, and another on the bottom of the buttstock. one further identifying feature of this rifle is the buttplate, wich is cupped and overlapping along the sides of the stock rather than being flush. the bottom of the buttplate is also corrugated to provide better contact with the shoulder. these guns were made by FN, and will bear the BELGIAN proofs. 43"OAL / 9.5 LBS / 22.75" BBL / your crest / reciever markings are correct for this model / type. hope this helps. best regards, mike.
