The 597 is trouble waiting to happen. Remington has had big time problems with clips not feeding properly , shells blowing the action into pieces(.22mag) among other things. They eventually changed out the plastic clips to metal ones but they still have issues. Id stay away from the 597. We have sent several back and refuse to sell them anymore.

God gave us all a gift. Have you found yours yet ?

Ive got a 597 in .22LR. I dont understand where people get all of these negative ideas about it. I have never had any failure to fires. Accurate as can be. Got the synthetic stock which feels very good in my hands. The plastic mag works fine... It is a tack driver...

I'm with trooperchin & drawn. I bought the first 597 22lr I saw when they first came out and have had good luck with it. Only problem I have had was replacing the spring that holds the slide open (which cost about $2.00)and some of the real cheap ammo doesn't cycle the action at times. With good ammo it shoots good. I personally don't like the clip setup on these guns as well as the 10-22(and yes I have them in all configurations too), but they aren't that bad. As far as the magnum versions go they had to redesign the action to work properly with the magnum ammo and I understand they had some bugs and trouble to work out, but the current ones I've watched friends shoot seem to be ok. There is begining to be a decent supply of aftermarket bbls and stocks for customizing now. And for the record, the bbl locks up much tighter on these guns than the 10-22.You have to take part of the receiver apart to remove them , but they go back together with a dual dovetail type design which is better than the rugers. I wouldn't be afraid to buy another one for what it's worth........[8D]

How 'bout something totally different? Maybe a bolt gun, or a .17 HMR, etc...

I still think that Ruger's 10/22 is a far better choice, especially if you are thinking about possibly customizing it later on. There are far more aftermarket accessories available for the 10/22 than any other rimfire rifle on the market.

I have an older 597 that my dad won at a Ducks Unlimited Banquet from when they first came out. It came with the little plastic magazines and was a jam-o-matic at first. Several thousand rounds and a metal magazine later, it feeds CCI Stinger like a wet dream. I would dare to say that it may also be more accurate than the 10/22.

The number one factor I would decide in between the two would be whether or not you want to customize later. There really isn't going to be much your going to be able to do with the 597, but you probably wont want to do much anyway. Its a great feeling, well ballanced little shooter.

ASK THE GUY AT WALMART . SORRY COULDN'T HELP MYSELF . FINDING AN UNHAPPY 10/22 OWNER IS DARN HARD TO DO . THE 597 HAS HAD PROBLEMS ,
I HAVE RETURNED SEVERAL TO REM. USUALLY BECAUSE OF PROBLEMS RELATED TO THE POORLY DESIGNED AND BUILT MAGS.

I still haven't found anyone who makes a decent aftermarket magazine for the 597.

I'm not going to say the rem is better than the RUGER ! but I'm a ruger fan . But one thing to take in consideration is ! Is a Majior arms company going to make a piece of junk to sell to the PUBIC? My 21 Cents Worth. Any Replies Send To JKOKAVEC@ORWELL.NET.
