Need help with my S&W 457
I took my S&W 457 to the range yesterday. This is the first time I have shot it in about a year and a half. It's just been sitting in the safe, unloaded. I shot 50 rounds of Remington UMC FMJ's, but out of those 50 rounds, I had about twelve that did not extract from the chamber. The gun was clean when I started, so I know that was not the problem. I was using three different magazines and had this problem with all three. The extractor looks good as well. Any idea as to what is causing this?

I'm clear, you're clear, everybody's clear...SHOCK!!!

I can't answer your question positively without having the pistol and ammo in hand, but it sounds like you either have a rusty chamber or gungy ammo. Something is creating more resistance than the extractor was designed to pull. I would suggest that the very first thing you do is try shooting the pistol again with different ammo. If it functions well, you have isolated the problem to the ammo. If you experience the same problem I would advise cleaning the chamber with a chamber brush, which in the case of a 9mm could be a .40 or .45 bore brush, and then closely inspecting it with a bore light or small flashlight. If you see no irregularities, then closely inspect the "hook" part of the extractor itself to see if part of it has broken off, comparing it to one in another pistol if possible. There just isn't much else it could be. 0 -
Other than chamber check another quick one is to take a cartridge and slide it under the extractor and see if the extractor will hold it in place ... if it slips out you need to replace the extractor. And if your not comfortable doing this go to a gunsmith ... should only charge you a few dollars for checking it over.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0
