Transfers in california
Does anyone know the facts here. I know if you are planning on bringing a new gun from outside calif, it must be on the approved list. What about consignment firearms or person to person transactions? can you get a sidearm certified even if it is not on the list if it new or otherwise? any help would be look upon with a big smile ^_^
Thanks

It depends if it is a handgun or long gun. Handguns not on the approved list cannot be brought into Cal or sold here with a few exceptions.
If it is a private party transfer, handguns do not have to be on the approved list, and they are exempt from the 30 day rule, but the sale still must go through a licensed dealer.
There is no "approved list" for rifles and shotguns so they can be brought into the state, as long as they do not fall into the "assault weapon" class or guns.
If you are a manufacturer you can get a gun approved, but it costs lots of money.

It is perfectly legal for an individual moving to California from another state to bring in an "unapproved handgun" as long as it is registered within 30 days. The law prohibits import for resale. 0 -
I thought it was 60 days. And after you move in you can always deceide to sell it.. *wink wink*

At http://caag.state.ca.us/firearms/forms/index.html
They have "Report of Handgun Ownership Form?(New Residents)"
and "Firearm Voluntary Registration Form"
I called after living here eight months and asked if I HAD to register a handgun brought in from out of state. The person fielding the call said that if it was stolen and recovered, I would not get it back unless it was registered. I asked if there was a deadline to register. She said "Just get it registered. The Department wants all of the firearms to be registered."
"Within 60 days of bringing a pistol, revolver or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person into this state, the person importing the firearm must complete and return a Department of Justice registration form or sell or transfer the firearm to a licensed dealer, sheriff or police department."

You're right, it is 60 days. I think that moving your family and all your wordly possessions to California just to import an unapproved handgun would be a little extreme. I doubt that the DOJ would consider the sale the motive for the move.0 -
I think there maybe a slight misinterpitation. I am curently in calif, and I want to say, buy a colt diamondback (which is not on the approved list) what do I have to do to get it in here? I know I could just look for a gun here but lets say I want one from florida... can it be new or does it have to be on consignment or used to bring it here to calif using an FFL? I really need help with this
Thanks

You can't. The California Penal specifically forbids import for sale of an unapproved handgun unless it is a C&R.0
