TOUGHIE bayo to ID
A good customer came in with a bayo I cannot find in Coles' books.
Made by American Fork & Hoe, US Flaming Bomb mark, 10.5 inches long. It STARTED life as a FOLDING-TYPE bayonet.
Not a cutdown, it is hinged on the back like it drops down on a spline. There are two additional small holes at the 6 and 12 O'clock position going in perpendictular to the blade. No handle having been on the blade, it stuck me as a possible para or seagoing prototype or maybe something for a Johnson if used with an adapter.
Can anyone shed light on this unusual US bayonet?

I have never heard of a freestanding folding bayonet.I just finished going through some old,old catalogs for you from Martin B. Retting as well as GoldenState Arms and found nothing. You are probably correct as to it being a prototype, or experimental.I see you've had no luck at Gunboards either. Good luck.

Hangfire,
Thanks for checking the catalogs. I was baffled by this as no reference available to me has it. I told the judge it probably was US Ordnance's answer to the Russian M44 Mosin side folder so from '45 on and up through Korea was where the search went.
Next inquiry will be with the NRA question and answer branch.
I'll post when info comes through.

I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't experimental for the M-1 Carbine. I know bayonets for them were not originally in their design, and a folding one would seem to fill the bill in maintaining their small size. Looking forward to the results of your search.Needless to say, I'll certainly keep my eyes open-Later...
