Another dumb question
Anybody explain what the difference in the Remington Model 700 terms BDL vs ADL? I realize one is spruced up and the other a plainjane, but what do the letters signify?

What is muzzle energy and how does it differ from muzzle velocity? 0 -
Muzzle energy is measured in foot pounds at the muzzle. A heavy bullet will produce more than a lighter bullet traveling at the same speed. Heavier bullets more, lighter bullets less(stated simply)
Muzzle velocity is just the speed of the bullet leaving the muzzle has nothing to do with energy,
Im sure there will be better, but this just a quick answer.

Bolthandle has the basic answer right. Muzzle velocity is just the speed that the bulet is traveling(measured in feet per second) as it leaves the muzzle. Muzzle energy is the striking energy that it is carrying as it leaves the muzzle. You can calculate the energy anywhere along its path of flight as long as you know the speed of the bullet at that point(100 yds.-200 yds., etc.) The old formula in a late 1950's reloading manual gives this formula: E = v2(volocity squared) X W(weight of the bullet) divided by 450240. There are other formulas out there but this one is good as any. Hope this helps, Pinhead 0 -
As mentioned by Pinhead ... velocity is a key factor in energy. Once you have a given bullet weight and profile the only thing you can really change is the velocity through different powders and charge weights(within safe pressure limits).
Look at the formula given or one of the others. If it is possible to increase velocity by 100 fps the multiplier based on velocity increases by significantly because the velocity is squared. A simple example: 1100 fps to 1200 fps changes the multiplier by 230,000 (1,210,000 to 1,440,000).
Lastly, if you increase the bullet weight, for the same nominal working pressure you velocity will decrease. And if you increase the powder charge you have a change in pressure so you have to be careful to stay within the published safe working pressure.
To get a better feel for the dynamics of bullet weight, pressure, velocity and energy ... look through a loading manual and note the changes for different bullet weights/types, and powders.
If your just starting to reload, be ultra careful and don't go for max. charge weights as most of the time those charges are not the most accurate for a given firearm. And don't be afraid to ask questions.
