Federal Ordnance 1911
While picking up my "new" Winchester 67A at the pawn shop this afternoon,I looked at this 1911.It's easily 95%,looks like it hasn't been shot hardly at all.I've been thinking on getting a 1911 style handgun, but know very little about the different brands and what's good and what's junk.Funds are limited,so I'd like to start out with one on the lower end of the price range, but don't want junk either.
Their asking $295,but I figure I can get it for $275(I know these guys). What do you all think? Are they any good,or should I hold off for something better?Keep in mind that I won't be shooting it a lot, just when I get the urge. All advice is appreciated.
Thanks,
BW

I have heard of Auto-Ordnance {kahr-arms} and the great Para-Ordnance but I am not familiar with Federal Ordnance, I will be interested in what some folks have to say about this. 0 -
Federal Ordnance, 1966-92, S. ElMonte Ca. - importer and mfg.
Bought by Brickley Trading late-92 who continued to import until 1998
Supposedly they built the 1911 known as the Ranger 1911 GI from 1988 to 1992.
Base model at 95% $300-325
Ranger Supercomp (long slide compensated version of Range GI) made in 90-91 and at 95% it goes for $750-800
Ranger Alpha 5 or 6 in barrel ranges $650-700
A reasonable 45 rank it somewhere around Daly level +/-
$275 in condition stated should be OK but try for $250 and come up as necessary with emphasis on company out of business and that their mfg. was "mostly" from new parts ....
If it is one of the higher models, just buy it.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
I had a bad experience with a 1911 kit that I bought from Fed Ord in El Monte KA. The firing pin hole was so far off that it would just strike the edge of the primer. The overall workmenship was very poor. To their credit, they did refund my entire amount. Just my experience. The gun you are looking at may be great. John

I wish you'd search back several months, because we had quite a thread going on Fed Ord 1911Als. I'll maintain now, like I did then, that the major parts were made by Itajuba in Brazil and are of excellent quality. Where the problem arose was in the fitting by Fed Ord, and the apparent lack of testfiring. All that I've encountered did require a little gunsmith T.L.C. to make them into excellent pistols, but that is what they became! I would not hesitate to buy one at that price, and even if I had to run it through the local gunsmithery for a checkout and tuneup I'd consider the money well spent. Go for it.[:D] 0 -
Federal Ordance of So El Monte, Ca- I knew them well. Located about thirty miles from me. I would not touch/sell anything from them. Have no idea where the major components were made-but-they put together
components of unknown origin and sold junk. Case in point: Purchased a
Remington Model 1903-A3 from them. The rifle shot extremely well at the range until.....the barrel liner came loose! Yes, they lined a
.30/06 barrel! I do not know of a responsible smith that would line a
high power rifle barrel. They went out of business years ago because of law suits. I am somewhat objective but....Federal Ordance is not to be touched................big period. 1010
