I'm not aware of any on-line reference source of S & W data, other then posting questions on the various boards/forums.

Your best bet would be to go to www.bookfinder.com and pick up a used first edition of the "Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson" by Supica & Nahas. Even though it's a earlier edition it will contain the type of information your looking for.

There's a second edition out as well, either will work, but if your buying the book and there is little difference in price by the newer one.

Will look it up and let you know in another reply to this mssg.

Hmmm, per second edition M33 was discontinued in 1974 and the serial number never got as high as the one you gave. 122678 is the last s/n given or there abouts ... SW has some slack in their s/n general reference.

If it is stamped 33 then it was made 1957 to 61 when they were changed to 33-1 at the beginning of the J frame production.

In 1969 they added an R prefix.

If it is not stamped is it marked for the "38 S&W CTG" on right side of barrel? Is the s/n on the front tang/forestrap? Does it have the regular or typical thumb piece/latch or a flat latch? Double check the s/n to see if it really is 6 digit and not 5.

Can't find my 1st edition, have sneaking hunch my son has "borrowed" it ... anyway I love a good S&W mystery gun. Either post the info here or drop me an email and we'll work through this.
