ID M1911A1 Frame
Came across a frame, stamped US Government, has been polished and chromed. Serial #1735089, G.H.D. stamped on left side of grip behind trigger. Has what appears to be Transportation Corps insigna stamped on right rear of frame. All markings faint due to polish and chrome job.
Any help apprecated.

You have a WWII Colt Transportation Officers frame. Needless to say it has been refinished. 0 -
Was it common practice to stamp a branch insignia?

Yes it was common. There were several different ones. 0 -
The mark on the right side of the frame is the Ordinance Dept "crossed cannon" final inspection mark, which was applied to Colt M1911A1 pistols 1942-1945.

Your frame was made by Colt in 1944. The GHD is the inspector's mark for Lt. Col. Guy H. Drewry who inspected Colt M1911A1s at that time.
nmeyers is correct about the "Crossed Cannon" Ordnance Dept. acceptance mark.0
