Colt Police Positive
The local pawn shop has recently added 4 Colt Police Positive revolvers to their display case. All show a patent date of July 4, 1905. One in particular is chambered 38 S&W, with a 6" bbl., s/n 866xx. This gun is parkerized. Could that be original? And if so is it rare and how would it effect value. The finish is 95% plus.

I was visiting a lady in North Carolina and she showed me this revolver. It's a Police Positive in WRF. The serial # I believe is 32,3XX and the revolver is very tight, the blue's pretty fair and it seems to function O.K.
She got the gun and holster from her late uncle and knows nothing about it. I'm clueless about Colts, but would like to know the approximate age and value of this one. Also, is the WRF chambering less common? Any information would be appreciated. She's not interested in selling it. Thanks.

Well, you got a "Goodie!" That gun and many like it were "Factory Marked" and sent to the "American Railway Express" which was the name of the company that handled Railroad Shipping, much like UPS is now. The items went on the trains and when they arrived in a city, there was dark green trucks with red trim and red lettering saying "Railway Express" that delivered the "Local" routes.
These guns were issued to the people that "rode the trains" with the freight, much similar to the old western movies when you saw someone "riding shotgun" on a stagecoach. Railway Express shipped great amounts of money from the Federal Reserve Banks to the Banks in almost every city served by the Trains. Railway Express disappeared in the early 60's.
You might consider hanging onto that gun......sometimes on E-Bay, you will find real leather holsters that are stamped with the same lettering and are from those times. Many of these holsters are beginning to turn up now that the old folks are dying off and they are being found by the heirs, etc. One of those would finish out a very Fun Gun! Congratulations and Enjoy!!!

Man does that bring back memories!! As a teenage collector in the early 60's I had many, many guns shipped to me by REA[actually to my Dad since I was underage].I remember the excitement when that postcard arrived telling me a package had been received. We didn't have home delivery, so we drove down to the Station. They offered "Inspection Privledges", and we opened them right there on the counter. If not as expected, I would refuse shipment, and the attendent would reseal it and return. They were shipped C.O.D. I also recall the counterman was armed.
Paul- You're not alone in missing the times you grew up in!![8D]

Yes, even "Illegal" Fireworks, (Firecrackers) could be had in the States where banned.....that is if you had them shipped "Railway Express!" Oh, what things came on the Trains! Yep, "Klein's in Chicago" shipped many a gun throughout the U.S., all on "Railway Express!" Of course, Kelin's Catalog was like a "wish list" that was made up of "everything available anywhere!" Yes, ....... those were the days!
