Winchester Model 70 "GOVT" Pre 60
I am trying to find information on a Winchester 30-06 model 70 "GOVT". I was told it may have been a special order winchester desgined for the military snipers. My father received this rifle after he set the record with the M-1 rifle at Paris Island in 1961. Any info on value and history would help. Thanks.

All Winchester model 70s in .30-06 were marked .30 GOV'T "06. Whoever told you different doesn't know what he is talking about. 0 -

The 30-06 was originally a developed for the military Springfield. Pre-64 model 70s marked them at least 3 different ways:
.30GOV'T'06.
30-06 SPRG.-
30-06 SPFLD.-
Most were the first as yours is. It has nothing to do with military issue.

It just denotes that it was the Gov't miltary round. Some brass cases are marked this way on the headstamp also, just as the older miltary 30-40 krag round was marked 30 U.S.,etc.[8D] 0
