Have any of you guys had experience with 230 grain LEAD round nose ammo in your .45 acp's? Reason I'm asking is a pal of mine is about to buy 300 rounds of 230 grain LRN instead of 230 grain FMJ's and was concerned about feeding problems. The gun he will be using is a Kahr(Auto Ordnance) GI 1911-it's basically a WWII style gun. He does use Chip McCormick mags in it. The ammo in question are reloads from Ultramax through Cabelas 300 rounds for $114--FMJ's are 300 for $164.

Less than 100fps difference I do believe.

Your targets won't know the difference.

Hello, not enough to worry about.

Paranoid keeps you alive, worry just gives you stomach problems.

Maybe 50 fps +/- not a material difference as far as energy goes. However the smaller pistol will have more felt recoil and require better recoil management.

Thanks for your input guys. I own a Colt Defender and after a few months I got used to the larger recoil and finally shot fairly accurate. I was concerned about the FPS because I noticed at the range I can see the bullet go down range when I let someone else shoot it and I am standing at the side. I guess it's a head game because since this is my CCW god forbid if I ever need to use it I don't want it to be as effective as a sling shot, lol thanks again.

You must have EXCEPTIONAL eyesight since a mild 800 fps load is roughly traveling 545 miles per hour!

Are you related to Ted Williams. He supposedly could see the individual stitches on a fast ball and as a party trick he read the labels of 78 rpm records ... course you may be of an age to not know who he was or what a record is[:D]

I can occasionally catch a glimpse of a 12 gauge slug or a .45acp round flying through the air.....I have 20/15 vision, I don't see it all the time but occasionally I do catch one in flight.

Contender, as much as I admired Ted (after all, he played for my beloved BoSox), the ability to see the stitches on the baseball is something shared by several of the all time greats - it allow(s / ed) them to determine whether the pitch is a curve or fastball, among other things. I recall reading where Rogers Hornsby proved it several times to doubters. Not something old eight eyes here (trifocal man) could do even in his comparative prime, but for those with superior eyesight, it is possible.

With the right backlighting, usually setting sun directly behind you I can see .223 out of a 20" rifle barrel travelling downrange, under most conditions you can't. .223 are small and 3300 fps. They look like lil zips of bright light from the sun backlighting. Its kinda cool to see em actually. .45s are slow big pigs compared to .223 :)

I am in total awe of anyone who can see something moving at 2250 mph.

Now when I was competing in 1000 yds. Service Rifle (open site) matches in the 60's and spotting for another shooter I could occassionally discern a ripple or disturbance of the air through the scope when we had high humidity and/or a strong mirage running. Other guys said they could see it to ... but never the projectile.

Now at black powder matches I've thought I've seen the ball, of course with all the smoke in the air maybe it was just the path of the ball.[:D]

And there is the here and now and the old man needs his glasses to see across the room[:(]
