Calling all LUGER collectors!
Hello Folks..[8D], from sunny Florida!
Thanks in advance for my Luger question. Can you tell me more about (or what to look for to further I.D.) my newly acquired Luger?
I have a really nice (80-85%) Luger stamped 1937 on the top front of the receiver. The number 78 is stamped on many various places. The word "Gesichert" is stamped and colored white under the safety. S/42 is stamped on top of the action itself along with another 78. There appears to be a kind of oblong lanyard ring on the back of the frame above the grip height, but directly on the rear of the frame. The mag is stamped with a 37, twice, and a sort of eagle with horizontal wings above it. It is also stamped P08 and fxo. There also appears to be three small eagles with vertical wings stamped on the right front of the frame. One eagle seems to have an 03, and the other a 53 stamped below. The third eagle has no such number.
OK....there's the bulk of what I know. Can you assign an approx. value for this gun in about 80-85 percent? I know values can be vague at best.
Stay low....

Jim,
Are the grips walnut or plastic with concentric rings? In 1937, the magazines were numbered to the weapon. All numbers and suffix should be present on the base. The fxo mags came later. The Waffenamts for your maker (S42=Mauserwerk) are correct.
More detailed information with a couple of pictures would be needed to properly evaluate your weapon.
The Captain will come along shortly with Ralph Shattuck email, but he will need photos also.
Best,

I agree with skyking. In addition, you will need to remove the grips & note markings stamped on the back. You will need to disassemble the gun in order to evaluate its condition; guns like this have often been fired with corrosive ammo, & the first places to look for corrosion are the bore & breech face.
As to value, you may want to look at the prices on www.simpson.ltd ; he is the largest Luger dealer in the US.
