10mm and 1911-45 choices
I am looking to buy a Glock 20 or a steel Witness in 10mm. What would you choose if you were to buy one? The Glock could convert to 40 and 357sig easily and more cheaply than the witness. The witness is cheaper and since I already have a glock (34) I might like to try some variety. I will handle both in stores but probably won't get to fire one until I buy it. I'm guessing it will come down to whichever fits my hand and points naturally.
After the 10mm purchase, or maybe before if the price is right, I plan on buying a 1911 style pistol in 45acp to see what all the fuss is about. From what I have read and heard, I narrowed my choices down to the Dan Wesson Patriot, a Kimber, a Sig 220ST, or a Loaded Springlfield model. Leaning toward the patriot. Any experiences/suggestions?

I'd say it depends partially on your needs. The Glock 20 has a higher capacity (with pre-ban mags) than the Witness, but the Witness is slightly safer around inexperienced users. You can't go wrong with either.
OR:
Do both at the same time... Get a 1911 10mm!
Here's my Kimber in, you guessed it - 10mm!

The handgun would mostly be used as target shooting and home defense. If Nebraska passes a CCW it may see some carry but I am still looking at fullsize semi-autos. 0 -
Oh, I forgot to mention that any of the nicer 1911 style 10mm's will set you back almost the price of the Glock 20 AND the Witness...
I think for casual use one would be hard-pressed to find a better gun in the price range than the Witness (and this comes from the owner of a Glock). The Glock will run at least $200 more for a new one, but will resale for more later (but the Witnesses also hold very well).
Go to a gun store and see what feels good in YOUR hand. The slightly larger grip of the 20 might turn you off of it. On the other hand, you might like the 20 so much you might not ever shoot your 34 any more (especially since you can even get aftermarket .22lr kits to practice all day long for nothing).0 -
get the Witness 0 -
stay away from the Patriot ... know 3 guys that have them and they have each had problems with them ... one of the guys is on his 3rd return to DW.

Bambi,
How do you like the 10mm Kimber? I want one really bad, but haven't committed the funds to order one yet. Sorry, chopchop for stepping on your topic, but I just had to know.

Gravedigger: For a gun that feels sweet in the hand and is accurate to boot, I haven't found anything better than Kimber. The gun is a lot more accurate than I am. A 1911 clone in 10mm, could life get any sweeter? [8D]
However, when something goes "bump in the night" my Glock 20 always has gotten the call. It is almost as accurate as the Kimber.0 -
I dont know about the dan wesson patriot but I have one of the pointman majors that I bought here on GB from dan wesson direct that i would not think of getting rid of,i have runover a 1000 rds threw it,never had a glitch,it out shoots both my kimber and my gold cup.Now it is one of the experimental models they make for show and samples but it by far is one of the best shooting 1911's I have ever shot. 0 -
People seem to love or hate all the Dan Wesson products. I haven't fired their autos but shot and own their sixguns and like them. I don't know if the disparity in opinions is varying quality or just whims. Magazines like them but I suppose they are paid to write pleasant reviews.
P.S. I'm fairly new so I don't know many of you but I'm shocked that Bambihunter didn't propose the Dan Wesson Razor, it combines the 1911 and the 10mm also!0 -

Shot the Panther for a while and LOVED it! Tremendous bargain.

I shot a Razorback before buying my Kimber, it malfunctioned at least once per magazine. It might have been an isolated incident but it was enough to steer me further towards the Kimber (I was already leaning that way). I did mention it on another 10mm thread: http://forums.gunbroker.com/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=93358
Now that ya bring it up, other 1911-styled 10mm's are (some info is C&P, it's quicker):
Colt - Delta Elite, Delta Gold Cup, Delta 10's, Ultra 10's, Match 10's (and the list goes on). The Double-Eagle is similar to the 1911 design, but double action.
AMT - Government model and the Javelina
Auto Ordinance offered its Government Model in 10mm but also I understand had it's Pit Bull offering in 10mm too
STI - has a polymer frame, highly modified 1911 in 10mm.
Para Ordinance - P16 10 at a SHOT Show one year, but I don't believe any were sold to the public.
Wasn't the Springfield Omega just a modified 1911 design???
Wyoming Arms I believe made one as well
I know there are some true 1911 customs available now too if you have the desire and the money to do that...0 -
