Shipping old gun

I wouldn't be fooling around with something like this. Being that your rifle can be used/fired with modern commerically available ammunition ( 7mm Mauser ). My 2 cents would be to ship it through a FFL Dealer, to cover your butt.

    Rob,
If it was made before '99, you can use USPS or any common carrier. It is an antique. Be sure to insure it.

The fact that a firearm uses commercially available ammunition has no bearing on it's status as an antique. The defining criteria is when it was manufactured.

An 1895 Mauser that was MANUFACTURED prior to 1899 does not normally have to be shipped to a dealer. Check your state and local laws.

The thing is, per the statement made, he don't know what year his 1895 was made it ... so until that matter is resolved he may not have a pre-1899 mauser.

Now if the receiver is marked with a pre-1899 date and the question was not phrased right ... then, yes, it can be shipped w/o the cover of an ffl to ffl or c&r

If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!

This Mauser was not marked with the year of manufacture. Two companies made these Mausers. Look on the left rail, does it say Ludwig Loewe, or DWM [Deutsche Waffenfabrik]
All Chilean Mausers made by Ludwig Loewe are antiques. Some DWM are antique, some aren't it depends on the serial number. I would not take a chance with a DWM. Ludwig Loewe Chilean Mausers are routinely shipped without FFL, by people who understand the law.
EOD guy is right, if it was made before 1899 it is an antique whether ammo is available for it or not, and it is surprising how many guys misunderstand this law.

This link gives the best explanation of the Federal antique law that I have seen. This is not just theory as Empire Arms is an elite military surplus dealer and they ship guns every day, without shipping to an FFL, if they are legally antiques. This link also gives a list of which guns are antique, ie how to tell by serial # if your SAA Colt is an antique.

On the left side of the web site you scroll down to Frequently Asked Questions. Punch in "Pre 1899 Firearms"

You may then look around the site and find Empire's list of antique firearms that will be sold to someone without an FFL. A few weeks ago he had 5 Ludwig Loewe Chilean Mausers in this category.

By the way, the Feds do regulate rifles like the Chilean Mausers, in a way. Although there is no federal regulation on the rifle, cartridges are regulated. So, if a guy was convicted of domestic violence, by Federal law he could have the Ludwig Loewe Chilean Mauser, but it would be a felony for him to posess ammo for it.

It is a Ludwig Loewe. It does not have a date code that I can figure out. It was shipped directly to me, I thought that it was made pre-'99. I am going to market it and I wanted to know what you experts thought of my shipping it out direct. Thanks for the help.
