Scope Suggestions Needed
I recently aquired a very clean Remington 600 Mohawk in .308 and an older Remington model seven in 7mm-08.
In keeping with the spirit of keeping these light weight hunting rifles in trim fighting shape i recently bought my first Leupld scope.
The scope that was purchased was the VX-1 2X7X33 becuase of it's over all length and light weight and American made as well.
However after going to the gun range this weekend i am quite disappointed with it.
The biggest problem is that for some odd reason Leupold has seen fit to put a razor thin crosshair in this scope.
It is hard to get a good pinpoint aim like i can with other scopes i have.
Also as it is getting dark the thin crosshairs make lining up on a target more difficult than a hunting scope should be.
So how about some suggestions on a light weight scope that has an objective lense between 32 and 40 mm that is not more than 12 inches in length and has a decent plex type of crosshair.
Scopes weighing more than 12-13 ounces are not welcomed.
Cheapo scopes are excused as well as i am looking to keep it for years.
Lastly has anyone had any experience with Cabela's Alaskan Guide Compact Scopes???

Check out the Burris compact scopes. They are are about what you have described and high quality. I've had one on a Winchester Featherweight for years and it's been good.I think the new ones are even better.-- Leupold has some good compacts too, but are more money and don't appear to be any better to me. --Burris has their "forever" warranty so longevity shoudn't be a problem.--Contact Burris and they will send you a catalog of their complete line that has all the dimensions, weights, etc.-- Number from last year(guess it's still good)for catalog : (970)356-1670 [8D] 0 -
Burris compact scopes will, as said above, very likely suit your needs well.

Leupold will replace or change reticles. I had a couple done years ago, but I know of a couple recent changes that cost around $60 so I'll suggest that as the possible current cost.
You've spent a lot of money on the Leupold and uless you can sell it and get your money back out of the sale, contact Leupold and I suspect the have a reticle option that is better to your eye and the cost will be less than you buying another mid-level scope.
If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!0 -
I have a Kahles 3-9 with 42mm objective. It is 12in. and weighs right around 12-13 ounces (can't remember exactly). I might be just a little bigger than what you are looking for but I have it on a light hunting rig and it works great. It also has the TDS reticle which gives you some hold over points if you like that kind of thing. 0 -
Go with a Burris Compact. 0 -
Leupold has the best custormer service. The couple of time that I have needed to deal with them I came away thinking that they didn't come any better anywhere in any business. Make the call, they will probably surprise you. 1-503-6460-9171 0 -
Leupold has superior products and GREAT customer service (as mentioned before) in my book.

You have email from rsturg@ruraltel.net. Check it out. I have a Burris Compact like the guys are talking about. 2x-7x. I guarantee it will fit your Remington Model 7 and probably your Mohawk 600. Makes for a very quick and light outfit. The price will be right, too. Contact me if interested.

I'm a great fan of the Leupold 6x42,for a myriad of applications. I have them on numerous rifle, that cover a broad spectrum and have yet to be less than very pleased in all circumstances. Chamberings run the gamut from 22K-Hornet to 375H&H Ackley and with many stops in between.
One of my pet rifles is 600 based and also wears that glass.
I'll spare you my Burris rant, other than to say they float for a reason...................(grin)0 -
Premier reticles is the place to look for reticle changes in lupie. As for the burris, we wont get into that. As Stick stated, they float for a reason. They should paint their scopes brown so they dont look out of place. I have conversed back and forth with Stick online and via phone. If the guy tells you a chicken dips snuff, you better look under the wing for a can. He knows his stuff. I have gone the burris route once and will NEVER again make that mistake. Lupie, nikon, ziess conquest. That is the big three to consider.
Everyone has a photographic memory. Only some have film.0 -
Leupold gets my vote for the above reasons. Dont get hung up over an ounce or two, it really isnt worth it. 0
