What would you say about such a trapdoor?
What would you say to this.
1864 50/70 trapdoor rifle.
Mechanically crisp.
VG bore with only slight darkening.
But...
Poor exterior. No finish left, numerous deep dents and gouges, two poorly repaired stock cracks.
Missing band swivel.
Missing rod.
What would you say the value on such a beast is? Everything locks up well and I am sure it could be shot safely with appropriate loads, but it isn't much of a looker. I know where I can get a similar piece in 45/70 for $350 which is a bit steep as there are lock pieces missing, but what would the 50/70 be worth do you think, all complete (minus the band swivel)

You want an honest answer? It is worth only what you (or any other buyer will pay to get it).

I paid $800 for a very nice one, all complete, with a sling. Check around and see if you can get the parts to restore it and for how much. May or may not be worth your time. 0 -
Well it is worth $200 smackers to me and it is worth $210 to someone else so forget it![:D]

If I saw it and confirmed your description, I would go $250. Don't mean to question your description but as you know word meanings differ from person to person. Hope this helps. 0 -
Jon, sounds like you missed out on the rifle; too bad. If you ever run across a similar good action/bore - poor wood rifle again and the price is right, I'd go for it. I have the same thing in a Trapdoor I got a few years ago. I am building a sporter on the barreled action and am saving all the old parts not being used so as to be able to put it back to original if I so desire. I got a precarved stock and have got it all inlet except for the shotgun style buttplate. You could even rebarrel the action for more lattitude in caliber, accuracy, etc. Just an idea. Emery
