Need help?
I have a 300 wsm in Model 70. I have had some gunsmithing work done to it and had it shooting about 3/4 inch groups. I took it to the range yesterday and it shot all over the place. Probably, something like 4-5 inch groups. It has a Kahles 3-9 scope with leupold rings and bases. My first thought is it could be the rings and bases. Maybe the Leupold's couldn't hold up to the recoil, but I'm not real sure. Just wanted to see if any of you guys might have some ideas. Thanks

The scope may be your problem, I had one on my 338 and had the same problems.rhr

I'd discern that the action screws are tight(fore and aft snugged up well, middle fastener with far less tension). Then I'd ascertain that the ring/base assembly is also tight.
After those determinations,I'd punch paper again and if still suspect,I'd question the glass.
Please tell me you don't have a windage adjustable mounting system. If so,remove and strike with hammer repeatedly and throw as far as possible. Do the DD's,Talley alloy's,PRW or a rail system that is mil-spec.
Your rifle is only as sound as it's weakest link...................0 -
Should add that I opted Leupold DD bases and Burris posilign DD rings(with .020" inclination in the ass)and a Leupie 3.5-10x 40mm upon my Winny S/S Classic 300Whizzum.
I then dumped the works in a Winchester Classic patterned handle by McMillan, with a Decelerator.
With Re-22 and 175SMK's at 3050fps outta it's 24" tube,it offered great down range performance, with very modest recoil. It would reach 1K with ease, with that base/ring and scope system(target turrets).
I think very highly of that chambering and built a short action Rem 700 with HS detach bottom metal and a Hart #5 fluted tube at 24" and twisted 1-10". It too is amazingly soft shooting, for the performance granted, though it is M40A1 stocked.
Not much a guy can't do,with a 24" 300Whizzum and good boolits. Once you get her whipped,you'll dig it....................0
