870 WINGMASTER 2 3/4 TO 3"
I have a remington wingmaster model 870 serial # T864734V chambered in 2 3/4 and was wondering if it is safe to put a 3" barrel on it.

It is safe to install this barrel, but you may encounter feeding & ejection problems with 3" shells as the receivers for are made differently. 0 -
I have put 3" shells through the receiver(unfired) to see if it would feed and eject seems to work fine.
I was mostly worried if it would hold up to the extra pressure of the 3" shells. does anyone no the differnce in the receivers?
thanks Corren0 -
never mind - I'll just watch and learn 0 -
As I said in post above you may encounter problems with ejection, as the shell does not reach its full length till fired and the crimp opens up. Pressures are not a problem as the barrel is designed for the 3" shell and the bolt is locked in place on a pump action gun. Basic difference in receivers are ejection port opening. 0 -
no. the whole world should understand that answer. receivers are all the same butyou wont be able to get the spent 3" hull out after you fire it.

Ok now I'm curious, if it is not the receiver then is it a case where the "bolt travel" isn't enough to allow it to clear in ejection? If so are there a couple of simple parts the can be changed out to convert to 3" shell? 0 -
According to Remington the magnum model ejection port is larger, indicated by the letter M suffix in the serial # on the receiver. 0 -
in the old days, remington and winchester had to modify there old 16ga guns when the 16ga hull was changed from 2 9/16 to 2 3/4. remember? the mod called for a smith to grind the extra metal out off the front portion of the ejection port. it was a lot easier than redesigning the bolt carrier and bolt to travel the extra distance backwards. the same rule applies today for magnums. the port is releived to accomodate the extra length. instead of an afterthought, the companies just incorporated it into the 3" guns. NOT the 23/4" guns. it is a known fact that modern gun companies dont like people switching things around on guns for safety reasons. thus, 3" guns are sold as 3" guns and 23/4 guns are sold as 23/4 guns. and of course, you may run into carrier length issues for the mag tube feed too. why bother? just by a 3" gun. theyre cheap enough!

bobski is correct on all points. The only other option is to shoot only 2 3/4" shells in the 3" barrel which works fine. But I can guarantee that at some point down the line with human communications being what they are that someone will have trouble with it trying to shoot 3" shells. If you just want the choke tubes and the 2 3/4" shells are fine with you just get tubes put in your old 2 3/4" bbl or look around for one of the old "Target" bbls which were 2 3/4" only but had tubes in them and were recomended for loads up to 1 1/4 oz.
Sometimes you can still find them......Good Luck..........[8D]0 -
I hate to admit not knowing any more about this than I do, seeing as to how I have well over a dozen 870's. I just follow the instructions on the guns. But you have gotten me curious. I have many old 2 3/4" only Wingmasters. I compared the ejection port on them to some of my newer Express Magnums. I can't find anything different. Every part on them looks the same and interchanges. That being the case it looks to me as if you put a 3" barrel on a regular frame it out to shoot 3" shells. I'll find out tommorrow. 0 -
Hey Corren,
I've been working right next to the ol boys that have converted, oh, 1 or 2, 2-3/4 to 3in. Rem 870's. You need to have a 3inch ejector installed. Its something you might want a gunsmith to do. Give Wilson Combat a call for a quote. 870-545-3618, ask for any salesman. We're the outfit that bought out Scattergun Technologies. 223ark0 -
Corren,
Just as 223ark stated, if you have a magnum ejector installed you can eject fired 3" hulls with no problem. Also, before you spend $$$ on a barrel to shoot 3", consider the following. If you are only wanting to shoot 3" steel (not lead, bismyth, or hevi-shot)for waterfowl, you can have your gunsmith open the forcing cone on you 2.75 chamber to accomodate 3" shells(when fired). Because the pressure created by a 3" steel load is less or equal than a 2.75 lead load, the chamber and barrel will be fine...but you will never hear Remington state that. That is all they have done to create their "steel bbl". If you have a Rem. 1100, a 3' will eject fine just as is but still need the forcing cone opened.[;)]0 -
as you can see by the posts made by others, eventually anything can be done if you tinker. but i will stress, tinkering usually costs more than the basic purchase and alters a gun. if you were to sell that gun without logging or recording the mod and in the future change bbls back with out changing the ejectors, look what youve just done. you sent an altered gun out into the market that could cause injury or confusion to its new owner if he re-alters something. follow me? it goes against basic gunsmithing 'principles,'and i for one would never use GB website to encourage altering guns to suit personal needs at the expense of safety. i will now fall silent on the issue. thanks for listening. i can sleep now.
