S & W model 17-4 ???????
I recently traded for a Smith & Wesson model 17-4 at a gun show. This is a K-FRAME, but it does not have the letter K in the serial #.
Here is the serial # AJD3328. This gun has a 6" barrel, blue, 6-shot.
The Gun Guide only lists a 17, & a 17-2. I was able to look at a plain model 17 at a gun show, and it did have the K on the serial #.
Does anyone know anything about this gun ????
Thanks, Vance.

According to Standard Catalog of S & W the last year the K was used in the sn was 1983. It shows your model 17-4 was produced in 1986. 0 -
S/N change over to 3 letters followed by 4 numerals started in 1980 and was completed in 1983.
Your AJD puts the revolver in the 85-86 time frame. However the 17-4 coupled with the S/N further points to 1986 as changes done under 17-4 stamp were before S/N change over. Yet it is no newer than 1988 when 17-5 came into being.
The style was continued until 1989 when the full underlug was instituted as change 17-6. Last change was 17-9 in 1998 and M-17 was discontinued in Nov. of '99
