Buy a side folder or a fixed stock .223. Underfolders look cool but the stock is cold against your face and it's hard to get in back of the sights because the stock is very wide.
The .223 AK is lighter as are the magazines and ammo.
I don't believe there are any .223 drum mags out there but drums are too heavy and bulky anyway.

    I'd suggest:

    http://www.gunbroker.com/auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=15423100

...the auction has ended but there were no bidders so it's still probably available.

Seriously, your best value right now would be the SAR-1; I almost bought another at a local gun show; the nice ones with laminated stocks and a couple of high cap mags. included were $380 (including the sales tax). The only reason I didn't buy one was because I spent my money on a National Postal Meter M1 Carbine instead.

I can't tell you which model to buy but I will tell you not to waste your money on a drum for any AK. They are not worth the price and they will overheat and freeze up any AK before you can rapidly fire them all. Trust me. The regular 30 round mags are fine, you don't need the junk drums.

That's the cheapest transferable bring back AK I've seen in a long time. There's one listed on antoher board right now for 51K, but that's really out there. One recently sold on another board for $25,000.00.

    trfox,

I have several drums and they all function flawlessly. Find yourself an egyptian maddi, not the usa made maadi but an imported one. They are the closest to the original russian aks. Norinco Mak 90's have a bad name, but I have one that functions and shoot really well. No matter wich one you get, they are a fun gun to shoot and very cheap. The type of gun you can leave behind the truck seat and not worry about. check out www.ak-47.net they have a comprhensive list of the variations and accessories.

I agree with V35. Go with the SAR 3. It will allow you to have the same ammo as your armalite and the reliability of the AK. My 2 cents. [8D]

Hey, there tr, I can sure sympathize with some else afflicted with the gun bug to the same extent I am! My current, and maybe final, AK is a Romanian SAR-1. These are close to being the least expensive, and seem to be as good as any. Several various AKs have rotated through my collection, and the SAR-1 is the only survivor. You know--semi-auto is semi-auto, and the $300 ones seem to shoot as well as the $800 ones. I understand v35's advice, and it's sure worth considering, but the REAL AK-47s shoot 7.62x39mm and there's lots of it around cheap. By the way--none of them are real paragons of accuracy. Adequate for combat, I suppose; but not groundhog material. Interesting series of rifles you went through (hope you held on to some of them); what did you think about the Yugo SKS rifles?

gap1916 & V35: Probably good advice on going with the .223 SAR3, but I already have all the .223 rifles I need. Plus, I fear that getting good, dependable high capacity mags for the SAR3 in .223 might be much harder that finding them in the 7.62x39 because the SAR3 is not as common. I could be wrong.

Der Gebirgsjager: Your's is the final bit of advice about which gun to buy I need to make a decision. I think I will buy a SAR1 because of such advice and the fact that a GB.com member has one for sale only a 40 minute drive from my house. In regards to your question about the SKS, I love all the ones I bought! They are not tack drivers but still a whole lot of fun to shoot. It is almost a bonus having a used, rugged, military rifle to have for fun shooting. I don't have to worry about dinging it or leaving it for a week without cleaning, etc. And the SKS is so easy to disassemble that I feel like some kind of weapons expert in that I can do it so quickly and easily and then put it back together and it works perfectly. I think every gun lover should have 2 or three. If anyone is interested (hope it is ok for me to post this since I have no financial gain in this) I bought mine at www.aimsurplus.com for only $89.95 which includes FREE shipping.

To help with defending our gun rights I hope everyone here will pass this info around about the cheap and fun SKS at aimsurplus. In my case I even made flyers by printing the aimsurplus.com web page and adding all the information about the gun such as how to have it shipped to your local FFL holder and what the total cost would be and how cheap the Wolf ammo was, etc. I handed these flyers out to every person I knew (at work, neighbors, etc) in the hopes the reader would be surprised at just how cheaply they could get into the gun and shooting hobby. I know of several people that did purchase an SKS because of my flyer and my efforts. Remember that if the majority of the American people owned and shot semi-auto guns, we would never have had the so-called Assualt Weapons Ban passed by Billery & Hillery Clinton.
