Anybody have a S&W 396 .44 special
Just wondering if anybody has one of these mountain guns in .44 special. It is an 5 shot L frame and is 18 oz. empty. Looks pretty interesting for packing around.

I am going to get one, like the light weight, like the big heavy bullet, will be easy to pack around and still have enough oomph for a mountain lion should one decide to launch an attack while I am wandering the Bighorn Mountains.

Nice gun, but keep in mind, Smith says not to use bullets heavier than 200 grains in this model.

I have the S&W 296 (I believe). It is an L framed, titanium model, in 44 Spcl.
I know BIG guys that will not shoot that gun during a pleasant shooting session with friends...let alone think about owning and practicing with one for bear protection/self defense.
IT IS A HANDFUL! I love it. But know your tolerance level. Borrow one if you can before buying. The heavy recoil isn't so much the 'pounds',... it is the 'violence/speed' of the thing. It will cause a warming in your palm after one, maybe a second round. Most do not complete the full five round cylinder in one go of it.
The violent recoil is exactly why S&W recommends light bullets with a HEAVY crimp. The recoil jerks the bullets out of the case mouths and can jam the cylinder.
