I am a big fan of the ruger no1 action. I've seen some very nice unique custom guns built on ruger no.1's. Its just a little different. Seem's like everyone has either a Custom Remington 700 or a Custom Mauser. I like to be a little different.

Hello, does anyone make a barreled action in .242 (I assume the "." eventhough it was not there)?

Paranoid keeps you alive, worry just gives you stomach problems.

At some point in the not too distant future Charles Daley should start importing what used to be the Mark X Mausers, again. What is to note is that they will be offering the mini mauser in .223 in stainless steel in your price range.

You may wish to look at Montana Rifleman actions in stainless,..they have been receiving some good reviews.

My response is typical,...I say Remington 700 for a host of reasons.

Sako has barreled actions in Brownells in stainless as well.

why chase the game when the bullet can get em from here?....
    Got Balistics?

You may want to consider one of the howa barreled actions. Although made in Japan, they are the actions used for the weatherby vanguard. Supposed to be pretty good shooters. My only complaint is barrel length. A little short for my tastes. I dont own anything shorter than 24" with most being 26". But that is just me. I handload and like all the juice I can get from a particular cartridge. True the animal may not notice the extra velocity gained with a longer barrel but I love to see velocities in excess of 3000fps pop up on the chrony screen. But in your price range I dont think you will find much better than the howa. Hear they also have excellent triggers. Never heard anything negative about them at all.

Everyone has a photographic memory. Only some have film.

I didn't see any mention of CZ they make a nice
mini square bridge mauser action and the guns I
have shot were very accurate. Dave

I guess it depends on how much you want to spend. The Howa and the Chas Daly mausers are a lot lower price than the others mentioned. Both are pretty good and worth the price.

Single shots sound more interesting because you can get
about 3" more barrel length in the same gun length.
Equally as important in my mind for whichever gun you choose is the availability of a set trigger or a precision adjustable trigger that can go down to a few ounces.
On a bench at the range or in the prone, single shots are less clumsy in loading and recovering brass. In my experience,a repeater really isn't necessary in varminting. That is why I Have never bought one of those pretty BRNO 22Hornet or .223 Mini Mausers though they've appealed to me for years.
