slide frame fit
On a 1911 or any semi auto pistol, how do I know if my gun has a good frame to slide fit. Is there a guide on how many thousanths gap between the two is good? How do I measure this gap? I have a good caliper for reloading, so I can measure the two pieces, but I have no idea what the dimensions should be. How much "wiggle " room does the frame/slide need to cycle properly?
Thank You.

I fit a slide till it will move through its full travel on only its weight. Lots of time on parts guns though the sloppier fit has to be accepted just because I don't like peening. Basically the guide is the minimun of wiggle that still allows for reliable function. There is no measurement I've heard of.

I've pinched a good few 1911 slides to tighten them. you will find you have to work your way along the slide because it wont draw in evenly. If the slide is too tight, you will have a cycling problem. In my experience the acceptable degree of looseness was a judgemental thing. I don't recall any Army specification on it. If your 1911
is reasonably accurate I would leave it as is. Minimum clearance will affect field reliability.0 -
I tried to estimate my "wiggle room" on my new Para for a GB'er.
I estimated it at 2/10ths of one millimeter.
It may be less.
It is certainly less than the thickness of a business card.
It is more than the thickness of two pieces of standard copy paper, but less than the thickness of three.0 -
Thank you for the info, I just bought a new springfield champion and while I was cleaning it before the first firing, I noticed it was much tighter fit than my other auto's. I have four other auto's that are much less tight than it is, I can't wait to throw lead down range with it. I was just cuious about what was acceptable for this measurement, I am not about to try making an adjustment myself, I would take it to a smith for that. I wonder if my others need a little smithing???
