Hello all. I purchaesed a 1911 a few years ago and I am not sure what I have. I looked up the serial number and it said that it could be a Union Switch ands Signal or a Colt. It has a Colt slide but does not say colt on the frame. On the mag release side behind the triger are the letters GHD, on the trigger guard on the fron is a W. The serial number is 1687155. There are crossed cannons on the side just forward of the hammer. There is also some writing on the frame above and forward of the serial number. I can sen pics but can't figure out how to upload them here.

    Thanks,
    Rick

When you had the mainspring out, you noticed that it has three prongs? The right side prong, as viewed from the rear, operates the grip safety. The prong should have a definate bend toward the rear; not a 90 degree bend, mind you, just a curve backward as perhaps 30 degrees. If you have the grip safety in your hand and turn it over, you will note that the right inside of the safety part has a ridge (were it facing away from you), and the right side spring prong rides on this ridge when the safety is installed. If the 90 degree bent tip on the bottom of the spring is held captive in the corresponding slot in the bottom rear of the frame beneath the mainspring housing, and the spring prong is riding against the ridge on the inner right of the grip safety, the part has to work. The left prong must rest against the sear, and the center prong returns the trigger.[:)]

Hey Larry, finally got it eh? The Mainspring housing may also be contacting the bottom of the safety. I've seen poorly casted aftermarket stuff that rubbed and didn't work. DerG is also on the right track. Don't be afraid to bend on the sear spring. If it breaks I'll send you another one. Can you send me a pic of the safety out of the frame? I need to see how much material was removed when it was fitted.

If it's a new pistol go back to the mfg.

If it is a pistol that you had some "customizing" done on go back to the person that did the work.

In either case you paid good money for something that apparently has a problem ... why go yankin and bendin on it, if you do and things still don't work you've given the mfg. or customizer an out by dinkin w/ it.

If you only have time to do two things so-so, or one thing well ... do the one thing!

Hello, "When you had the mainspring out, you noticed that it has three prongs?" The mainspring doesn't have ANY prongs, the sear spring does. If you don't know how to state what you are talking about, don't talk.

    Hi "Supreme One",
Where is your comment directed? I know its not to my friend Larry. This is his first project 1911 and he is seeking advice and knowledge. Not pointless criticism. DerG made the mis-statement, and so what? We understood what he meant. "Expert" advice is usually given by those with some patience and understanding, you're teaching not scolding. Please, if you can't give friendly advice "don't talk". The General Discussion forum is the place for arguement.

    Larry,
What type of safety is on the gun? Is it a standard military type or is it a custom? If its a Mil type I'll just send you another one along with a new SEAR SPRING. I lost the pics you sent of the gun when you originally bought it. Let me know. Keep in touch.

You guys have me motivated into learning complete breakdown of a firearm before I build one.

After I get my Erma RX22 running (one more spring), I'll take it completely apart and try to understand the mysteries of the "sear" and how the mainspring functions; what makes a trigger better...etc.

And another note. My father taught me "If you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all".

The gun has a custom manual safety. Ambidexterous. It also has a custom slide stop which is also ambidexterous. As for the grip safety it is stainless and matches the essex brushed stainless frame. Now I cant get the trigger to work. When I took things apart the pins holding in the hammer and other parts to the trigger system came out. I went to m1911.com and looked to see how its supposed to look. I will keep trying. Im having a good time believe it or not. I understand why so many people like them. When I finally do shoot it, it will all be worth it.
